I am seventeen and a senior in high school and last March I was diagnosed with a rare immune disease. I started my treatment two days ago and it has been very rough on me. I really wanted my boyfriend of two and half years to be here for a little bit at the beginning. He is in college about two hours away and so I talked to him about coming down. He said he couldn't so I said okay and left it alone. He ended up coming down and my mom was furious.
Did I do the wrong thing wanting him to come down? We are really close and have a great relationship, I just wanted my best friend with me.

I guess the reason I am still bothered by it is because when he came she started screaming at me telling me how selfish I was and that I am overexaggerating everything. He wasn't mad, it was his idea to surprise me and come down.

I am a mother of a 17-year-old, and I have to say that if my son had a situation such as yours and his girlfriend cared enough about him to come be with him, especially when she was in college and had to drive 2 hours, then I would support that fully. I don't know what issue your mother has with your boyfriend, but as a mother myself, if my kid was going through what you are going through, I would want him to have all the love and support he could, to help him through it. Shame on your mother for adding to your already full plate of stress by reacting the way she did. If she was angry, then so be it - but she should keep those feelings away from you - you need all the support and encouragement you can get so you can get better. Her reaction was wrong.

Why was your mom furious? Was it because he said he wouldnt come down and then did or just because he was there at all? She might feel sad that you would want someone other than her there since she is your mom. Plus why couldn't he be there? She might be mad that he left you without the support you wanted and showed up last minute. She may feel he disrespected you, but its important to know why he couldn't show. Talk to your mom and find out what her reasons were and evaluate whether or not you were happy once he was there.

You can't control what other people do. If your mom is furious over him coming to see you that's her problem. One more year and you will be eighteen. Then get your own place and you can do whatever you want. I don't see anything wrong with wanting your friend with you.

Why was your mom angry? You can share this hard time with the people you love most and your bf is one of them. I'm glad he came down but I think your mom's reaction was wrong and you didn't screw up.

Calm yourself you did nothing wrong. Parents especially mothers have a bad idea about who and what their baby is seeing and doing.
You did right and don't let anyone tell you differently.

Why would your mother be angry? Did you tell her you asked him and initially he said no? In any case you need all the support you can get. Let her know that you need him with you now.

Maybe your mom feels a little bad that you wanted him with you more than her. Mothers usually feel that way. Spend some time with her, that should help. :)
