Because the democrats are scared of hurting anyone's feelings. Theodore Roosevelt stated that if you are going to live here - speak English. You can't be true to this country as long as you are holding on to your own.

It's crazy this is even up for debate.

Look it up it is public record Democratic Senators are voting against placing English as a first language and FOR giving illegal immigrants social security.

What language or language group is going to take over English as the primary language in the US?

Every single native Spanish speaker from Central and South America would have to move to the US in order to have a native Spanish-speaking majority. That's the basic law of numbers, and I can elaborate on the math as an addendum if necessary.

The only other languages on our planet that have more native speakers than English are Chinese (China) and Hindi (India). Those are also the two most populous countries in the world. If you're worried about a language overtaking English as primary, I'd worry about communist China finally opening its borders and a flood of Chinese coming to the US.

While there are certainly a large and growing number of native Spanish speakers in the US, there are not nearly enough to even convert a single state. California, the state with the largest percentage of residents who are not native English-speaking, publishes all its legal documents in 47 different languages, mostly Asian in origin (the primary being Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Khmer and Vietnamese). While there are nearly 9 million Spanish-speakers in California, there are also over 1 million Chinese, 3/4 million Korean, 3/4 million Filipino, and 1/2 million Vietnamese. With such demographics, while California may have Spanish as its main secondary language, the state would not disenfranchise the over 30 million non-Spanish speakers in the state by making Spanish primary.

Also, 30 of the 50 states have put forth in their state constitutions that English is to the be the official language, even though the federal government has no official language. Only three of those states have a second official language, New Mexico (Spanish), Louisiana (French) and Hawaii (Hawaiian, duh!).

Probably stupid questions like "Why can't we keep English as our primary language in the U.S.?" is why.

Nobody's changing the "primary" language except the people that used it example "Plutoed".

Now are you prepared to give up the words Mayonnaise, Barbecue, Addict, Alarm, Boulevard, Butcher, Candidate, Chapel, Denim, Dollar?

None of those words and many many more are English or American in origin.

Your question is based on simple ignorance.
