It sounds like nappy rash to me. SHe should keep it clean, never leave the baby in a dirty diaper, use a preparation and vaseline to protect the bum and air out the bum now and again but letting the baby lay out with no diaper.

having three children, and providing care for 12 others for the last 16 years, I can give several suggestions: There are so many different things that could be going on, and I would need to know wether it was a boy or girl, if diapers are cloth or disposable, has the child had loose stools, if the child is on any new medication or foods, the age of the baby, and how long it has been present. Is the skin broken? one is to apply a small amout of anti-fungal cream, like used for yeast infections, if it is just where the folds of skin are touching, provided there are no other areas on the buttocks that are affected. If it does not respond to this after 24 housrs then stop using the anitfungal cream. This could also be a bacterial skin infection, which can many times be cured by careful cleaning with mild soap and warm water. If a dirty diaper was left unchanged for a longer period of time, the delicate skin could just need to be left open to air if possible. Warm baths can help with baking soda in the water, and dry thoroughly. If the color has been there for sometime and does not seem to be causing discomfprt, it may not need any treatment. Again, if the symptoms change the doctor needs to be consulted, and many times a phone call can answer the questions without a visit to the office. Check the baby's temperature, and have as much information as possible to give to the nurse/ MD regarding the condition, and measures used even if it is only applying a bottom preparation such as balmex, A&D ointment, plain white vaseline as a barrier against the urine and stool . hope this helps, jean

I know that baby powder is not used nowadays, but she could put just a little on her fingers and rub it on the red area. It will probably clear it up. Or even plain Vaseline might help. It is probably just a burn from bowel movements.

if your friend has cornstarch and vaseline put that on the babys bum, for about 7 days and that should clear it up.
