9 carat is the ideal choice for wedding rings as it is not so pure as 18 carat. Gold is a soft metal, so 18 carat rings wear and scratch more easily. 9 carat will look exactly the same as 18 carat to start with but will look nicer for longer.

There is no difference in appearance. However, there is a difference in strength. A 9 carat ring will be stronger than an 18 carat ring. If you or your fiance react to different metals the 18 carat will be better in the long run. It is more costly now, but why buy a ring if you will never get to wear it. I hope you and your fiance will be very happy together!

I'm not sure where you are at...I haven't ever heard of 9kt Gold....but things change.. Here, in the US as of the 80's, most rings were 10kt or 14 kt gold...some were 18 kt, and many rings from Europe are 18 kt. The lesson here is this: Solid gold is 24 kt. It is heavy but very soft. 24 kt gold will not hold up very well with everyday wear. Therefore, the gold is mixed with another alloy, to make it stronger. 9 kt would definitely be the strongest ring for wear, however most Wedding rings are made of 10, 14 , or 18 kt gold. The alloy that the gold is mixed with gives the ring color......so there is White Gold, Yellow Gold, Green Gold and Rose Gold...then there is Sterling silver, Stainless Steel, and the very expensive Platinum. An 18 kt Gold ring will be much more expensive than a 10 kt ring, because it has 18 parts gold and less alloy....it's weight will be heavier, but it's wear will be shorter.By this I mean, that in time the Ring shank will wear, and have to be rebuilt. (I have been married almost 28 years and my Wedding Band is 14 kt Gold and the shank has been rebuilt twice) This can be expensive thru the years.....a 10 kt gold Band will wear longer, because it has more alloy then Gold...however, as for appearance, only you and your Jeweler will know the difference....The Band is engraved with the kt of gold on the inner side, and a 10 kt ring can be just as Beautiful as a 14 kt or 18 kt. ring . A Hint of advice....if you have Diamonds set in the Band or Engagement ring, make sure to check the Prongs twice a year with a reputable Jeweler.....and when he tells you they need to be rebuilt or tightend......spend the money to do so....It's far less expensive than replacing the Diamonds!

Go with your budget the carat in the gold is only the quality - 9ct is good quality but 18ct is even better thats all you can always change it or add more gold to the original ring later on at a specialized jewelers when your budget allows it
Hope this helps

I don't think there's any difference in appearance. Get the same carat as your engagement ring, otherwise the harder one (smaller carat) will wear away the softer one. A friend of mine was presented by her fiance when he proposed with a platinum diamond solitaire - this meant their wedding rings had to be platinum too, for the above reason.

9 carat is harder wearing
18 carat will mark more easily
mine is 18 carat purely because my engagement ring was 18 carat and 9 carat would have worn it down when being worn together

it all depends on the carat of ur girlfriends engagement ring cause if thats 9carat and u buy an 18carat wedding ring her engagement ring will wear the wedding ring away over time as 18carat is softer then 9 plus 18 is more yellow then 9.

I'm assuming you are talking about your ring and that of your fiancee matching. Sorry, trust me on this point. No one will ever hold your ring fingers up together to see if the rings match.
It doesn't matter.
If you are taling about your fiancee's engagement and wedding ring matching, then yes it does matter from a colour and carat perspective as some of your other correspondents have advised.

I was trying to look inside my ring to see what the stamp said, but I've worn the inside of the ring smooth (I've had it 11 years), so I don't know for certain. I think my engagement and wedding rings are both 14k, but I couldn't tell you why. Probably your fiance's ring is 9k because it's cheaper that way! And the higher the carat, the softer the gold, so it's also probably more sturdy.
