Christmas day 2005, my dog passed away right in front of my eyes, and I feel my vet's to blame. See, my dog had been feeling bad for over a week and the "doctor" took blood samples way before she died. At the beginning, he said that my dog had arthritis and gave her some meds for that but never got the answers from the blood test. Then all of a sudden at 7am on 12/25 my dog died. FIVE days later, AFTER I call the vet, I was told that my dog had Kidney failure. Now that doesn't happen overnight- it takes a while before one can have kidney failure, there are so many symptoms involved. My question here is, should I sue the VET? His negligence killed my dog! I do not know what to do, but I know that I want some revenge. My beautiful baby could be still alive if he had been honest with us (anyone from Long Island, DO NOT GO TO THE BELLPORT ANIMAL HOSPITAL- ALL CROOKED PEOPLE!!!!!) Please advise.

This was more than a year ago, so suing him would be a waste of time. You have nothing to prove negligence. To be honest with you, kidney failure is fatal. No cures around for it. I can understand your upset over it all, I lost my bichon frise and felt that if she had been diagnosed sooner (she had cushings disease and really suffered for a long time from it) she might have survived. But, there is no way of knowing that for sure. All I did know was she died and I was/am heartbroken. But blame isn't the answer either.
I can't speak for these vets that you mentioned, but most truly love animals and do their very best to help them. It hurts them when they lose an animal. Revenge isn't the answer, it will hurt you more than them.

I know you are angry and sad, However the most common problem with older dogs is kidney failure. Unless the failure is due to an infection, nothing can really be done... I can't think of anything sadder than having that happen on Christmas, because a Christmas will not go by that you do not have mixed emotions... Long bouts with kidney failure is really painful for a dog, It can go on for months, it at least sounds like your pup didn't suffer long.

You did not mention which medicine was given for the arthritis. Usually, vets give Rimadyl. Whatever your dog tood, research it on the web. There has been a lot of deaths due to Rimadyl. And yes, it destroys the Kidneys in some dogs. I believe that this is also the case with Deramax. The people at Rimadyl have been making settlements with people who have lost their dogs.
Also, vets are supposed to check for Kidney function before prescribing these meds.

things like this happen more than you think. I don't think suing is the answer, because according to the law animals are property and you only get something under $100.00. You should always look for a AAHA animal hospital. American Animal Hospital Association has standards that vet offices have to meet and they are inspected to make sure they meet the standards. When you look for vets in the phone book there will be a red AAHA symbol in the ad.

i would possibly seek legal advice and yeah i would sue the vet. A dog is as much a part of the family as a brother or sister, even a child.
blood test results only take a day or two tocome through, the vet should have known about it earlier than they told you.
Take legal advice and sue the vet!!

sorry for your loss, but kidney failure is fatal in dog, even if you found out a little sooner not much could have been done for your dog.

i agree that you talk to someone who knows the laws but it would not be too late-thats why clinics have to keep ALL records for 7 years. if they dont have the dogs medical records then there is another problem that they would be accountable for.

HM, I say try at least, but it's been over a little more than a year so I'm not sure if they can do anything about it but call your lawyer and see what he/she has to say.

It's probably to late. You should have done it immediatly. Also if one vet doesn't work out try taking it to another one.
