You know if you are embarrased by it then so will she. I have three daughters and everything is wide open for discussion. I hit tops likes this ..head on.

My kids love the Double layers Tank tops. Its a good start so they don't feel like they are making such a huge leap into womanhood with moving to an actual bra.

I start off on the double layered tank tops and then they choose to move up to traning bra's and then the regular ones. They made the choice on their own which is also good for themselves.

The same way you told her, or will tell her, about her period. And by the way, if she already needs bras, you may want to have that conversation sooner, rather than later.

Sit her down and calmly explain that she is getting older, and is becoming a young lady, not a little girl, and needs new under garments. Tell her that you can go shopping together, and choose colors and patterns that she likes, and make it more fun by purchasing a number of bras with matching panties.

To decide what type of bra to purchase, you'll need to measure your daughter. This gets a little awkward if you don't have a good relationship. I will explain how to acquire an accurate bra measurement, which may help you, as well as your daughter, if you're wearing the wrong size. You could make the measuring less stressful by measuring yourself as well. You may need to purchase a few new ones as well.

First, measure around the rib cage, beneath the breasts. You will obtain a measurement in inches (for example, 31 inches). Add 5 to this (31 + 5 = 36). This will be your band size (the number part of the bra size.

Now, measure around the fullest part of the breasts, usually across the nipples, and around the back. You'll get another measurement in inches (Example, 39). Subtract the band number from the second measurement (39 - 36 = 3). This will determine cup size. Use the following chart.....

Half inch = AA
One inch = A
Two inches = B
Three inches = C
Four inches = D
Five inches = DD or E
Six inches = F
Seven inches = G

So, If your first measurement was 31, 36 with the 5 added, and the second was 39...you will wear a size 36C bra.

The reason I recommend measuring your daughter is because you may not even be able to find a regular bra in her size, depending on how small she is. AA is the smallest cup, and 26 is the smallest band size. So if she measures less than 21 and 21 1/2, you'll have to purchase training bras. If her measurements allow for a fitted bra, buy one, as it will probably be more comfortable.

Also, don't be too extravagant. She's going to keep growing and will probably need new bras every 9-12 months or so. Wal-mart is great for little girls undies.

Good Luck!

My now 14 y.o. daughter hit puberty early on too...it's hard but you really need to try to be open-minded about the changes her body will be going through in the next few years...YOU want to be the one she trusts with the issues that are bound to come up...Don't be afraid or embarrased to bring this up with her...And if you have her wear tanks or sports bras first that will help her make the transition...and when she is ready for a "real" bra, department stores are the way to go...you can get help from a professional fitter...your daughter will be more likely to wear a bra that fits her well...not saying you have to buy at that store, but just get her a pro sizing...Good luck and YES they are growing up way to soon and fast these days...I'm living it too!!!

I have a daughter that is now 14. When I noticed she needed one which was around 11 years old I choose a day to take her and make a day of it. We picked up her female cousin and went out to lunch, to the nail salon, then shopping..which was were the bra's came in. Having someone there her own age made it easier.

My daughter is 5 and came to me and asked if she could wear some bras, they acutally do come in her sizes, although they're more like sports bras and t-shirts. I bought her a few and she only wore them a few times, but it'll get her prepared for when she does need them. My sister did the same with my niece and she's now 9 and needs them, so it wasn't a big deal to her b/c she's wore them for play since she was 3.

My daughter was already uncomfortable with the shirt rubbing on her skin, so it was quite easy to say "You aren't comfortable with that, that's why most women wear bras, lets go to Target"

We bought the Hanes, no tag sports bras. No hooks, just over the head. It goes by chest size, so maybe measure before you go (underneath the breasts, across the ribs, kwim?)

Good luck.

My daughter is now 12 and at 10, she was ready to get bras because she knew her body was changing.

Talk to your pre-teen and see how she feels about it. I took my daughter to store, went to the undergarment section for their age and asked someone to take her measurements and assist her in finding the right one. She will thank you for asking and it will make her see that you've got her best interest in mind.

Good luck and enjoy this time in her life. She'll be a teenager soon enough like mine and they'll not need our help as much then.......

My mom did the same thing for me and my now 11 year old sister. She told us that we were going bra shopping and that was that. Then to make it more embarrassing she made me show my dad. Now my 8 year old sister has no problem talking about anything and I don't either. For some reason it made me grow out of my shyness.

I bought my 10 yr. old bras at Target...they were like sports bras almost...they have straps, but no hook and eye closure in the back....just helps them get used to wearing them...I think at 10 they are still too small for a regular 'sized' bra....mine was anyway!
