I was on board the USS Sacramento AOE-1 Oiler, they decomitioned it a while back. Now they are going to use it as a practice for test of guns and stuff. So yeah they are going to sink it.I would like to have a plank or something of it before they do this. Is it possible? and how do I go about doing it?

The ship will be towed out to sea, away from population centers, and it will be sunk by fire from other vessels. The last time my ship did this, there was a competition between junior officers on several ships, and the Lt JG from my ship (a female) was the only one to score a direct hit amidships.

When they're done, get yourself a dive team, and go down and get whatever you can pry loose.

(It may take you awhile to discover that ships aren't made of planks, they're made of metal sheets and iron frames.)

To become a "plank owner", you have to join the navy and serve on a ship at it's commissioning.

Most navel vessels have an association of sailors who have served on board. If you can find the Association for the Sacramento that would be a good place to start. I would also call my Senator and Congressperson and get them to ask the Navy on your behalf. I have known several Navy vets who obtained fittings or shell casings from vessels that they served on board. Therefore, it is possible if you bug enough people. As a last resort find out were she is currently berthed and talk to the dock watch - bring a hacksaw.

How many people should be allowed to take a piece of a military target?
How effective a target would it be if everyone that could take a piece did?
Be happy that the Sacramento is going to perform military duty as her last act and improve the safety of our forces in the future by doing so rather than becoming a part of a Chinese made I-Pod or satellite killing missile.

The direct answer is no, your asking for valuable military hardware.

I'm disappointed. From your question I was hoping that you were building a pirate ship and need a plank to make people walk.

*sigh* Life is never what you think it is. Good luck with your search.

Plankowners are a part of the crew that commissioned the ship. Are you a plankowner?

I did it once. Lots of work loading a ship out.

i'd make a few phone calls or write a few letters. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to get a section seeing as you were on board.

Sorry I can't help anymore
