There are only seven wineries on Malta and most of the wines they produce are from imported Italian grapes. You know how little land surface there is in Malta, and how crowded the islands are.

There are some vineyards on Malta and Gozo and there are some superb wines made there. I think the leading wineries for locally grown wines are Marsovin, Meridiana and Delicata -- who also makes very rare wines from indigenous Maltese varieties.

But the problem is 4 fold. First the wines are necessarily made in small quantities, second they are expensive compared with California or Australian wines made in large quantities, third is very few people have heard of them so there is little demand for them, and fourth is that -- for all the previous reasons -- Maltese wineries find it hard to find international buyers willing to stock them. And there are a lot of thirsty locals and tourists visiting the beautiful islands :)
