Most airlines start UM (Unaccompanied Minors) as early as 5 years old and charge for escort as old as 12 on some and 15 on most others. Some airlines dont accept UM's on flights with connections, only non-stops. Some, dont accept them at all. So you'd have to check with the airlines directly.

The fee is usually $50 each way and varies by airline. The biggest thing you need to know is you can not book a UM on the last flight of the night or last connection. So, make sure you either call the airline directly or make a reservation early in the morning or first part of the afternoon.

I worked for an airline as a ticket/gate agent and I'll be glad to fill you in on the process of how it all works. Shoot me an IM or E-mail and I'll be glad to help you out so that you and your child will know what to expect.

I started flying by myself when I was 9. There are kids that go back and forth between their parents every two weeks, alternate holidays and summers and they log more air miles in a year than most adults. I had an 8 year old who was a Medallion because he flew so much between his parents on opposite sides of the country. He was the worst behaved child and was a holy terror, but he knew how to navigate the airports better than most adults.

Good luck and I'll be glad to answer any more questions you may have and help you with finding flights

I'd call the airline that they would be flying on and ask the age a child can fly by themselves.
