Yes... here's what I do.
3 cloves of garlic, smashed
1/4 cup soy sauce (for a steak)... use 1 to 2 tablespoons for sliced raw beef... depends on how much.
1 green onion, sliced thin
a few grinds of black pepper.
Mix it all together and spread over the steak.
You're using it more like a rub and not really soaking it in a pool of marinade.

All marinades need an oil and an acid (lemon juice, vinegar etc) A really fantastic marinade is Asian Sesame dressing with ginger and soy you can use for meat and chicken. Kind of sweet, just add a little more soy. Congrats on the baby!

Soy sauce, wine or vinegar, oil, ground black pepper and 1 clove of garlic, smashed. This makes for a great tasting steak on the grille. I add some cornstarch to marinate the beef for stir frying.

Yes, but it will be very salty. Also, the sodium will pull the moisture out of your meat and make it tough and chewy.
If you want a good marinade, use oil (holds the moisture in), vinegar or lemon juice (mild acid which acts as a tenderizer) and spices (flavor).

It's possible to buy low salt soy sauce. The other suggestions are all good ones.

Yes. Add a little sugar and water to it first. Also nice to add a little orange juice if you have it.
