That is a misconception that people have. I lived in Germany for almost nine years and Europeans view alcohol differently than we do. They drink it for the taste where most of us drink it for the effect. Teenagers drink alcohol in Europe, in Germany, but not babies. There are a lot of myths around alcohol overseas. Another myth is that they like their beer warm. Their beer is warm because they did not have the frigeration systems that we do. They have small size refrigerators in their houses and in their businesses so they keep alcohol and soda stacked in cases in storerooms.

my dad's german, and he says that it's not that they give beer to their children but that it is accepted as something perfectly normal to give them a sip or two. Besides, the alcohol content in german beer is not really high.
