AVG is excellent for free anti virus software, do however make sure you download the latest version of 7.5 as its predecessor is no longer free and you will be plagued by popup adds to pay for the full program.
Windows Defender is mentioned above by anther user, this is not an anti virus program but an anti spyware program.
You should have anti virus, anti spyware/adware and a good firewall on any pc that accesses the internet.
All of these are available free at the likes of www.download.com
just enter the names in the search box on the site.
I would reccommend;
ad-aware free edition
windows defender (a microsoft program, available only if your os is genuine)
AVG anti virus 7.5
Zone Alarm firewall free edition
( spybot search and destroy if you can't have windows defender)
Remember not to have 2 firewalls or 2 anti virus programs installed/running as they can conflict with each other. Make sure you run the "update" feature on each application to bring them right up to date with the latest definitions.
And lastly, common sense, keep yourself safe by being careful what you download and what sites you visit. Keep your windows security updates up to date by setting them to download auto, if not make sure your visit the windows update website regularly.
Best of luck ;)

www.grisoft.com and down load agv 7.5 for free. I've used it for about 3 years, on 4 different computers and would recommend it.

The free ones aren't good at all. You have to pay to get the good ones.
