go to your local shelter... or look up the breed rescue groups in your area (you didn't state the breed) . Sometimes Vets have lists of breed rescues in your area and they also might be able to help you... but honestly a mutt is sooooooo much better than a purebred, plus there are so many out there that need good homes and the purebreds tend to have more issues than the mutts... I own 2 mutts of my own!!! smile...good luck in your search....

If the breed you desire is recognized by the AKC then check the link below and find the breeds name. You can contact the person listed with the breed by clicking on the name to get an email address. This person can refer you to breeders in your area so that you may go and meet with the breeder, tour the facilities, see the dogs and pick your puppy. If you are unsure of the breeds name you can click on the second link below and browse the recognized breeds list for the dog that most resembles the one you want.
If the breed you are searching for is one of those custom mixed breeds like a snorkie or labradoodle then DO NOT put the breed on here. These people will freak out on you and say hurtful things to you, and you will not get the answer you want. Do a search for the specific breed by using Yahoo Search or Google Search to locate a breeder of one of these custom breeds.

You really should visit the shelter in your area, and if there is several, visit them all. If a dog catches your eye spend some time with it, go home, come back the next day and ask if you can walk the dog, really get to know the dog first. I think you'll know if the dog is right for you.And try to keep an open mind about the breed, alot of dogs have individual qualities that aren't suitable for all people. Visit the shelter and i'm sure the right dog will find you.

Pet Finder does not always have all the breeds that are available at the shelter. You should go visit the shelter and play with the breeds that are there. Also look in your News Paper ads as well.

Try letting the dog pick you out instead of you picking the dog.

You can try Puppyfind.com

I would do a local search by the state you live in, and others that are driving distance. This is so you can check out the puppy and see how it kept.

You can try breederinfrocenter.com
To see if there a breeder of the breed near you

Go to the American Kennel Club web site and click on the breed you are looking for. It should then have a tab for breeders.
Good luck finding what you want.

just watch in your local paper or you could go to a shelter
you can look on line but I would suggest that you do not purchase one that way...you will not be able to make sure that it is the right puppy for you and if it is truly healthy. etc.....
