Sit-ups and crunches, which should always be done with knees bent, work well, and also try yoga stretches. You need to stretch the obliques and latismus dorsi (side muscles) to keep the waste trim without bulking up. Yoga can keep you long and lean, where weights and aerobics can bulk up your muscles. Swimming is gentle on the joints and benefits the whole body because you'll stretch as well as strengthen muscles. The stomach will flatten as long as the other muscles that support the back and sides are also exercised at the same time to create a firm, natural girdle of muscle around your middle to stabilize your mid-section. This will also help prevent back injuries which can come back to haunt you in your later years. Good luck and happy exercising.

Be aware that you cannot thin your stomach exclusively. Your genetics determine where your bodyfat will shed from. For example, I tend to shed from my neck and arms before I shed fat from my abdomen.
