I am 5'4'', 13 years old, and a whopping 130 pounds. I am SUPER athletic. I am a competitive swimmer, basketball player, dancer, soccer player, and I run track. I am very strong, I think, but I'm wondering if I need to lose some weight, because my weight is higher then all of my friend's. Help, please? And, do you have any suggestions on how to eat healthier for people my age? Your help is appreciated!

Even if you weren't athletic, 130 pounds is actually well within the recommended weight range for a teen of your height. Stop comparing yourself to your friends and compare yourself to what is Healthy!!

Plus, you play sports throughout the year. This means you have muscle. Muscle weighs three times more than fat. I bet if you had your coach take out the calipers and measure your BMI you'd have such a low fat content.

So don't you dare try to lose any weight, okay??!?!?

Eating healther... hm. Well you're already a vegetarian. It kind of limits what I can suggest. Rice and beans (together!) or nuts will give you more protein, which you need to maintain strong muscles. Dark leafy greens will give you more iron. These are two things vegetarians tend to be low on due to not eating meat. And you really need to find a way to get more calcium since your bones are still growing. Make sure you continue to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Make sure you're getting the recommended calories per day for your age and activity level. You need more calories per day than the average 13-year-old because of your athletic schedule. And there has to be some way to convince your family to buy you some vegetarian foods... I mean won't explaining to them that the foods you're requesting will balance out the fact that you don't eat meat convince them? They really do need to make some accomodations for your diet. Browse around the internet for some recipies you think everyone would like, or find stuff that you can whip up quickly just for yourself. Fight to make sure you have that balance between all the food groups.

But no losing weight!!!

Good luck! :)

The real question is simple....do YOU think you are overweight? Are you only concerned because the weight of your friends is lower? You have to take some issues into consideration. Many young people nowadays are extremely obsessed with their weight and most are usually underweight because of this. Then, all of a sudden, other friends, such as you, view their weight as ideal, but yet, they are really underweight. Therefore, this trend continues and everyone starts to believe they are fat.

Now here's the real issue. You are not fat. Your body structure determines your average weight which can have a margin of 20 lbs, but using a general rule, you are around your average weight. If you are maintaining a balanced diet and obviously, exercising, in your case, sports related, then you are fine. Don't give in to peer pressure. It isn't worth it.

i'm sorry.. did you say you were fat??

You sound fine to me, and the fact that you're athletic is great!! Just because you're heavier than your friends, it doesn't mean that something is wrong with you. Everybody's different... you shouldbe happy and confident with your body.
You're still a teenager, and you're growing. I wouldn't suggest that you go on roller coaster diets, but eating healthy at a young age is a good habit. Fruits and veggies should be a big part of your diet, as well as whole grains and protein to help you grow. Take in as much calcium (milk, cheese) to keep your bones strong.

Hope this helps...and don't forget that you are perfectly healthy! =)

If you are a lot more athletic than most of your friends than the reason for your weight being higher is due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat does...read up on "BMI" body mass index, that will help explain it.

Obviously when it comes to eating, regardless of your age, avoid fast food, eat fruits & veggies, whole grains, fish & chicken...etc. If you doi end up at a mcdonalds or burger king, get a grilled chicken sandwich instead of a burger...or one of the salads. Drink a lot of milk to keep your bones healthy & choose 100% juice drinks over soda...
