All of my kids started with a toddler bed after their crib...they DO lat longer than you think, but if you do decide to go with the single bed then I would make sure that one long side is pushed up against the wall, and the other side I would put down a thick blanket or mattress pad on the floor. Something to that effect that could be put down easily at night and picked up and put out of the wasy during the day. Ultimately it's your call, but relax hun this isn't one of those many life-changing decisions you'll make over the years when it comes to your child LOL, believe me I know...

A vote for single twin platform bed.
Because the size of toddler bed isn't that much smaller than the twin and boys do grow pretty fast. Platform bed is lower than regular twin with a mattress and a spring box; the fall is not as high.
The key is to buy railing on one side and push the bed against the wall on the other. Baby store sells them.
Let him choose the bedding, like Mickey Mouse or Sponge Bob and some decorate pillow with the same theme. This way it will filled up the bed, so it looks smaller and cozy but big enough for an adult to lie down for story time.
He'll love the idea of themed bed. And anytime you can update the bedding according to his age without buying a new bed.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I've just had to make this decision myself with my 2 year old. Logic tells you to buy a single bed as he will adventurely fit one That's the decision we made but I wished we'd bought a toddlers bed instead. These are the reasons: He can hardly get off & on the bed himself as we bought a good quality devan which is quite high- so this is a danger. He loves jumping on it so we worry in the mornings and sometimes when we're trying to put him down that he might come over the guard. He would be far safer in a toddler bed. They are about £70 in Argos and would last at least 2years. The only benefit we have had from buying a single is that we have been able to sleep in it too while we've been getting him used to it.
Good luck

Don't waste you time or money with a toddler bed. Get a regular twin size bed. If you are worried about him falling out - they have many different types of side rails that are removable for when he does not need them. I actually just used a big body pillow on the outside of my daugher's bed. Just make sure nothing is on the floor next to the bed that he could land on and that could poke into him if he falls. My daugher started sleeping in a regular twin at 2 and she loved the fact that all her stuffed animals could be piled at the end of the bed. She said it was like she wasn't alone. She had an issue with that because she said it wasn't fair that I got to sleep with her dad and she had to be alone. Besides in a toddler bed you don't have a box springs. Give the kid a good night sleep with a good box springs and mattress. It's better for him.

My daughter is almost 5 years old and she still sleeps in a toddler bed. I don't think a 2 year is big enough for a single bed yet. I liked the toddler bed, because it was low to the floor and that it had side rails. I didn't want her falling out.
I would wait for a while for the single bed.

My daughter is very tall and was in her toddler bed until age 4 - but that's just because we're serious procrastinators.
If you want to start him in a normal bed, that should be fine, you can get side rails to keep him from falling out. You could also just get a normal single mattress and box spring and put them on the floor at first if you're afraid he'll fall.

def get a normal bed i put my son in a cot cot bed same as toddler bed he was to big by the time he was three waste of money. Get a normal bed then buy a safety rail once he is older you can take it off wheres if you had the toddler bed he will out grow it by the time he is 3 so its a waste of money and it makes them feel more grown up with a big bed.
Hope that helps good luck

If you plan to have more kids then a toddler bed might be a good idea, i have one for my kids and my first two have spent time in it. It is close to the ground so if they roll out they don't get hurt and it has rails on the side but sometimes they still roll out if they arent' laying in it right. Although it would save money if you just went ahead and got a single bed and then bought a few bed rails that you can attach on the side.

Cost-wise, a regular twin bed is definitely a better buy, because at 2, he's likely to literally grow out of a toddler within the next year. The only benefit to a toddler bed being smaller, is that it doens't feel as big and empty to a little kid as a twin bed. but then, you could always pile on the stuffed animals and pillows and that should kill the empty feeling! If you're worried about a twin bed looking to adult for him, there are lots of options for that, too. It's rather expensive, but something he's likely to enjoy for several years, Little Tikes sells racecar beds in both toddler and twin sizes. And you can buy fun sheets to and covers to put on it. My son had a toddler bed for only a few months before it was evident he was too big for it. Another big drawback, I always put my son to sleep (rather than just sending him in there by himself or something else equally scary) and as a grown-up I was to big to lay on his toddler bed with him. Definitely a consideration if you want to read him stories at bedtime or comfort him if he stays in bed sick or anything. Also, a twin bed will be more comfortable. Crib mattresses are purposefully made rather hard, so that newborns don't get their face smashed in it and suffocate. So I'm sure his little body would be more cushioned on a twin mattress that was made for comfort. As for falling out, you could just get a twin mattress and set it on the floor, or Fisher Price makes bed rails that slide under the mattress to keep him from falling out. The top of my son's twin mattress is actually only about 6 inches above the ground, so you could look for a really short head/footboard, too.

I think that toddler beds are a waste of money also. They usually have mattresses the same size as cribs. A lot of people put their toddlers in the crib with one side taken off so that they do not feel weird transitioning from crib to bed but since your son has been sleeping with you this doesnt seem to be a big concern. this is what i did with my son. the problem is he was falling out a lot so i bought a bedrail. they dont make them for toddler beds or i didnt see any because toddler beds usually come with premade sides. so i bought a twin bed one and actually tied it on to the rails and it works well.
Twin beds are nice because you wont have to transition him again. And the thing is, you have to buy all new bedding again too. And he'll have to get rid of his spiderman bed or car bed or whatever he gets so this might upset him. On the other hand, you can go to target or kmart and buy a toddler bed for $30 and use your crib mattress and sheets if youre low on money. He could help pick which one he wants. If you go with the twin bed, let him pick the sheets and even which side rails he wants if there is a choice. I had the choice between pink and blue...of course he'll pick the blue but let him choose. Let him pick out a new fluffy pillow and let him help put them on his bed.
If you have a lot of money to spend (though, who does) there are some awesome childrens beds at specialty stores that have tents and play areas and slides...he'd be super excited about it. though personally id be afraid he'd never sleep.
Anyway, my final opinion is that if you dont feel comfortable putting him in a big bed yet its ok to get the toddler bed. its not a ton of money. but, if its not making you uncomfortable, a couple of siderails on a twin bed will be just fine. hes no smaller for it than a newborn is for his crib. THe biggest thing is to get him involved and excited about it. Let him pick out the mattress and sheets and everything so he wants to lay in it rather than has to.
GOod Luck! It only took one day for me to transition from crib to toddler bed.
