I got all this too! I'd never give my banking info out, not even to a legitimate employer (unless I'm physically standing in the HR office and they want to directly deposit my paycheck). So this makes me wonder if there's a way to reverse the scam. I don't know about banking, but with new technology I think checks are verified right away. Therefore there must be a real bank account somewhere So why not just cash the check at the issuing bank, pocket the money and disappear. The issuing bank would go after the account holder.
