Ouch, its uncomfortable but you won't die. Stock up on soft foods like soup....the first time you smile with those braces off I promise you will forget all about the discomfort.

Getting braces on is the easy part! When you go in and get them tightened is where the pain comes in. I wouldn't say it hurts like hell...but you won't want to eat for a while...but eating or chewing sugar free gum right after you leave the orthodontist will help with the soreness!I wear a retainer every night and it is still sore when I take it out..nothing you can't handle! The pain goes away fairly quickly! Listen to what the orthodontist says..they don't just say those things for nothing! You will end up with pretty teeth and a beautiful smile! Good luck!

Getting braces doesn't really hurt, it just makes your mouth/teeth sore because the braces and moving your teeth. Your teeth are rooted in so whenever they move, it makes them sore. You will experience some pain when eating while your teeth are sore. Sometimes they hurt without even doing anything. This means the braces are working. It wears off after a few days. Just take it easy. This also occurs after they are tightened. The process of actually having them put on is kinda uncomfortable but not painful. Hope this helps.

how old are you Mary, and are you having teeth extracted, palatal expander or anything like that?
Having braces put on isn't painful but you do experience some soreness later on for a few days. I'm going to send you my best advice!
Congrats on your new braces! You are on a mission to obtaining a better smile not to mention having your teeth in perfect alignment! As for the pain, it's not uncommon for there to be a little pain because you have bands put on pushing teeth apart and strange wires and brackets all over the place. Your mouth is probably feeling pretty full right now. Do yourself a favor....don't push or rub on your lips, pushing against the brackets on your teeth can cause mouth ulcers and can be very painful. Use the wax the dentist gave you and eat soft foods today and tomorrow. Lots of ice cream, cold drinks or Popsicles! If your dentist prescribed Advil or Motrin for pain be sure to take it. Even today your teeth are on the move, but trust me, it does get easier and less painful after a few days. Every month you will be going back to see your dentist for adjustments. Sometimes it's a little uncomfortable for a day or so, but keep in mind how great your smile will be when it's all over! It will all be worth it in the long run. Some of my favorite patients are in ortho and it's always great to see their reactions when they finally get them off. It's usually one of hugs, kisses and Lots of looks in the mirror at their fantastic smile! Good luck!

It hurts quite a bit, and usualy will go away in two days sometimes one. The hurtting won't start imidiatly though, the teeth need to be moving for that to happen, so maybe about half an hour later ur moth will be sore. Pain killers never worked on me so i had to deal with it. Ice cream can make one feel better though. ^^

Hey, you have the same name as I do.. and I too had braces for 5 years.. it hurts, but not unbearable. Kind of like when you pull a muscle... how you feel a strain, and it aches.. but nothing you can pinpoint.. don't be afraid.. it isnt that bad.. and besides, when you get them off, one of the best feelings you will ever have is looking at your teeth in the mirror.. :)

it's not really pleasant, but it's not so bad either. I had headaches from the tightening and learned to just take Tylenol or something when I'd go in to have that done.
Having the braces put on was a piece of cake compared to having them removed.

when i first got mine... all of my teeth became loose. it really scared me. but its perfectly normal. just eat soft foods for the firs couple of days like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and french fries. stuff like that. whatever u do.... DONT EAT COLD FOODS.... sorry but the girl above doesn't know what shes talking about. cold foods are the worst thing to eat. they loosen the glue on the brackets causing them to fall off and given you more trips to the dentist.
but as for uncomfortable... a little. they dont hurt. you will just feel pressure against them. thats all. but just think of the results when you get them off. i had braces for 3 years. it was uncomfortable at first.. but after maybe the first month, probably less time than that... u wont even realize you have them.
id say the worst part is that the brackets scrape your lips sometimes but my dentist gave me wax to rub on the edges to get rid of it until my mouth got used to it. but its easy to get used to.
good luck! if you have any questions email me.

You get some pain and it feels like your teeth are going to fall off if you bite really hard . Each time you get them tightened try a recipe vanilla ice cream and cover it with warm honey and a dash of cinnamon. It tastes and feels good.
