does anyone think that smaller scottish teams will ever have any hope in future of winning european trophies as Aberdeen did in the 80s. Or has that train now sailed?

Go ahead and laugh at me. I'm used to it. I think within three or four years, Gretna will do well in the UEFA Cup. Three years ago, their new owner said Premier League within five years. He then proceeded to run away with the Third Division, then ran away with the Second Division the next year. Their third year of the five year plan, they are now running away with the First Division. As a Second Division club, they pushed Hearts hard in the Cup Final last year. They flopped in the UEFA Cup play-in this year, but they aren't ready yet. They will be in the Premier League next season. I predict a top six finish. They will put players in that can play. The UEFA Cup might even be the next season. Within five years, they will get a long way in that play. I don't see Champions League play very soon because Celtic and Rangers are too strong. But, since Rangers seem to be down, Gretna could end up in second place soon. Who really knows what will happen. Are you pissing yourself laughing yet? You may be laughing out the other side of your mouth in a few years. If they can afford to pay what Celtic can, I'd rather go there than Glasgow if I were top quality. It's less dangerous and much more beautiful and peaceful.

Eventually it will happen again. 20 years ago Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were feared in Europe and the time will come again when other Scottish clubs will perform well in Europe.
HERMAN- Don't make me laugh re Gretna. They are a team who mainly consist of ex-SPL players who couldn't hack it at the top level
If/when they come up this season they better brace themselves for a long torturous time ahead. They were embarassed by Derry, they were found out by Hibs in the CIS cup.
They may be good enough for the lower leagues but top flight football will find them out!!!

Sadly, i don't think its possible. Just look at what happened to Gretna when they played in Europe, hammered 5-1 at home by Derry. also remember hibs playing dnipro, they lost 5-1 away back when they still had Riordan & O'connor. Hearts' eimiation from the champ league by AEK. It all demonstrates that the smaller clubs just aren't of the required stanadard. I don't think i need to remind you that money counts for so much in the modern game, and it becomes even more important in europea competitions, so when even the old firm can't keep up, what chance have the others?

Realistically the answer is "no". If you look at the Champions League last 16 it is almost always the same teams and they are dominant in their domestic league. So they keep earning the money that allows them to improve their team to the disadvantage of others in the league.Even Rangers and Celtic struggle to make a real impact in Europe nowadays and it is not like it was 30 odd years ago when the playing field was more even.

no way its sad but true no matter what happens rangers and celtic will dominate the top two spots in the spl and its just a matter of time before tyncastle gets knocked down so romanov can cash in.

Well you never know what's going to happen - especially in football. It's a funny old game.

PS Atheist - don't answer football questions if you don't know anything about the game.
