I did one of these once.

the egg can take a bit of force. the more you spread the force out, slow it down (before and DURING the impact), and cushion it, the better

parachute - good but not reliable. if you're dropping while standing on a table or something, you're parachute will never open and you waste your materials on the parachute

the crate - building a sturdy structure for the egg only means the egg breaks on the crate, not the floor.

ugly mess - the trick that worked for me was to make something that will not rotate when you drop it and tries to absorb the impact before it gets to the egg.
I had popsicle sticks, a zip-lock bag or two, a plastic trash bag, tape, and tissue paper.
I stuffed the tissue paper and plastic trash bag into the zip-lock bag. That gave the egg a firm, but well distributed home. Then I shoved the popsicle sticks through the zip-lock bag (vertically). I did that because I had some popsicle sticks..... The idea was that the sticks would hit the ground and stretching the plastic around would absorb some of the fall.

i might purchase a Styrofoam block out of your community crafts save, and then hollow out the place the egg might circulate, and a tad bit extra area...yet making particular to make the outlet uniform so as which you would be able to create a lid with the objective to talk ( sort of such as you may on a jack o lantern). next, i might place stuffing ( any will do ..which includes cotton or w.e which is additionally gained on the craft save.)..making particular that there is greater advantageous than adequate to make the egg stay firmly in place. After that, i might situate the egg interior in simple terms so, and place the "lid" back on.

Not knowing the mechanical rules, bubble wrap and a little duct tape will work wonders... use plenty of wrap, play with it...
