Consciousness is relatively knew.
Serious science is even newer.
Oh, and let me tell you what.
We're very often not driven by intelligence, or even consciousness.
Many studies have gone to show that both the subtle details of life and physiology can make us choose things that we're not aware of the real reasons for. Too many to cite... pick me for best answer,s eriously, if you need details.
So, basically, as long as there is sex, we will procreate, and whacky, emotional types will persist.

It's the same evolutionary principle that is at play in the fact that we still have an appendix, even though in humans it appears to play little or no produtive part in the workings of the body. Evolution likes to keep redundant things around a while in case it finds itself evolved up a blind alley and it needs to backtrack. :o)
Besides, one thing we know about evolution is that its processes are slow, with the occasional quantum leap. We've only really been thinking in evolutionary terms since the 19th century, and there are a lot of hardcore creationists out there. The process will catch up eventually and the evolutionary process will move on. But I think we may be stuck in the middle of the cycle at the moment, hence the conflict between the old way of thinking and the new.

If material explanations could account for all we know then no one would be responsible for what they believed. They would be simply following the dictates of their genes. In which case it would be foolish to condemn such individuas as they are no more responsible for their genetics than anyone else. For open minded readers check out the book uncommon decent. people should also look at Michael Denton's book evolution a theory in crisis. I also suggest reading the work of Biologist Ralphe Seelke o read the opinion of Phillip Skell an emeritus professor at Penn state university and member of the national academy of sciences in (The scientist August 29,2005). Finally try and refrain from calling people stupid as this really serves little to answer any question or build any bridge. If anyting it displays a level of desperation and a lack of ability to discuss issues at hand.

extreme stupidity and wilfully ignorance are not evolutionary traits intelligence is and how you use that intelligence is up to you, you are lumping all evolutionists together if you believe in god and evolution you are an evolutionist, being an evolutionist dos not mean you do not believe in god being an atheist does. A theory is exactly that an idea, once it has been proved in then becomes fact, theories can change depending on new evidence unlike religion.

memeology... it think this refers to... ideas do come and go, look at every religion that is considered a myth now! it just takes thousands of years. christianity as we understand it today is very different than that which evolved out of christ and it will eventually evaporate, probably in 3,000 years. our problem is that we think on the TODAY NOW IMMEDIATE! timescale because that's what we're used to, thanks to relativity and science lol... but this religion is probably young. even judaism has changed and evolved. does god act like he did in the torah? if he did, well... there would be no palestine, nor would there have been a holocaust. either god has turned his back on them, or they aren't believing quite as strongly as in the time of moses. judaism is on its way to being a myth and it's what... 4,000 years old? it will probably become a myth at the same time as christianity finds its way to THAT side of religion considering they share some characters and books. then judaism will have been the longest running religion, i think! however, it will most likely be replaced by something else. a new prophet will arise toward the end. redirect people into a new mythology... although at the rate we're going everyone will have nuclear weapons and the earth will be destroyed by us in the next 100 years. wow... sux to be our grand kids!

For a start, No such thing as evolution, OK. To make it simple. I always thought that for something to evolve it had to have a need, (So we are told) therefore if IT had this `need` for survival IT had better do it PDQ before it died, right? How on earth are the evolutionist going to explain the Pitcher Plant. If it had to grow a pitcher to survive, how did it survive while growing the pitcher. Get this, the pitcher is a bladder like appendage with a hood over, it contains a fluid, it has a neck coloured dull red covered in down sloping hairs. Now how does a plant know that whatever it catches in this bladder to be drowned and digested in the juices, has sight (Attracted by colour) Has legs (Can`t crawl out) Is air breathing (Drowns) Is food (Digestible), and to top it all has a hood over the bladder to stop rain diluting the juices...AND IT`S A PLANT.

As a Christian and a Creationist. I have read through the answers. I am impressed with some of the answers, the ones that encourage debate on both and neutral sides. However this them and us thing is crazy. This subject can be looked at, we don't have to act like children arguing about the biggest conker on the playground (not that they are allowed conkers anymore) When debate stops and you think you have won, that's the time you must worry. Because we most certainly don't know everything.

I have discussed evolution (the very basic facts, that is!) with bible-ists and creationists, and what they fail to understand is the agent-neutral nature of evolution. They ask "But how is a sheep an advantage?" as if some external force (god) were trying these creatures out. The basic fact is that a sheep is not an advantage, it is the result of the survival of some traits over others in the myriad generations of sheep that have led to the one we are looing at. I guess believers just can't imagine no god. In fact, it's intersting - as soon as you CAN imagine "no god", he ceases to exist.

There are many examples of adaptiveness of false beliefs.
For example, note the extreme overcautiousness of many animals, which become "spooked" and flee in response to the movements of inanimate objects blown by the wind. If one among them were to become more discriminant, and only flee in response to real threats, it would become separated from the rest of the herd (flock, school, pride, whatever). That's not good for reproduction.
Similarly, believing that you can't get pregnant if you have sex standing up (or whatever boys are telling girls these days...) is a false belief that gets you pregnant. Falsely believing that your teen-aged boyfriend will love you forever and provide for you and your child...gets you pregnant. Heck, if we only held true beliefs about things like dating and pregnancy and sex and childrearing, we'd have probably died off 2 million years ago.
There is no good argument to be made that having true beliefs is always better for reproductive survival than having false beliefs.

All the warning labels, lawsuits, and other means of avoiding personal responsibility and critical thinking have changed our environment in such a way that intelligence is no longer a trait being selected for. It would appear the Creationists are evolving into herd animals, as their only effective defense is gathering in large groups and bellowing loudly.
