Prison is not a vacation hotel. Its one of the many ways they try to deter crime.

Here is the deal. There are several reasons why there are community or open showers in jails. One coule be for the fact that it saves on floorplan space to make more room for more cells to house more inmates.
I can tell you right now. If you did put showers in each individual cell, it would not reduce anything bad happening to anyone while in jail or prison. In fact, it would probably raise the statistics of violent/sexual acts in a facility. It just gives them another place to go.
If you have an open shower or community shower room, it leaves it open for the guards to watch in there for something happening either in person or on camera. That is pretty much the biggest reason they don't put showers in individual cells.
I work in a correctional facility, and I can tell you that if something is going to happen, it does not have to happen in a shower. A lot more worse things happen nowhere near a shower. They can actually happen in the cells.

Because the inmates would no doubt figure out how to take the showerhead apart and turn it into a weapon. If they can make a shiv out of a styrofoam cup, imagine what they could do with the showerhead and faucets.
I'm being serious too, my best buddy's brother is in prison in El Paso right now on drug charges and you'd be amazed what those guys can do with unlimited time and no one watching them.
Plus it's more cost effective to have one central shower for them to use all at the same time.

Prison with 3 meals a day, cable TV, workout room/equipment, basketball court AND a private bath/shower?
What's wrong with this picture? The only deterrent left may be the fact that there aren't private showers...YET!

Because it is more efficient to have it set up as like a high school gym type setting. Hey, lets face it, they are not sent to jail for comfort. They are sent to jail because they committed a crime. So if they have to share a community shower, oh well so be it. Maybe they won't do anything wrong to get sent back once they are out.

Some do. In West Valley detention Center in Etiwanda Calif. I was there for a short visit. They have one shower in a double cell with eight guys to share. Then you can shower all you want whenever you want. The shower is running all night with guys doing you know what! LOL

The communal shower also serves as a central point of entertainment as Bubba makes his moves.

That is no difference than basic training in the military, or showers in the school... our tax dollars pay enough money for them, why should we increase the water bill???

Who cares what happens to the inmates when they drop the soap? My tax money should not go to their privatized showers. How about don't commit a crime and you won't have to worry about getting aquainted with the big fella who's been eyeing you?

Dont get prision confused with Tv and the movies...Your not going to get raped in the shower...if you mouth off you might get stabbed...but thats about it...plus you have to be one sexy dude to get some in prison.

I would think that 1) it's too expensive and 2) how does that solve the problem you are talking about? I mean you are not alone in your cell either!
But I guess we can leave this to the experts to answer.
