NOT that I think it's bad!! I just want to know your thoughts.

Does anyone feel the need to defend their position?
Does anyone feel like something is missing?
What has gone on in your life to shape your beliefs?
Do you feel upset with people who do carry religious beliefs? Why?

Serious answers, only please.

NIce quick responses, every body -thanks ( to most of you)

Noone has mentioned how their beliefs have been shaped - I'm curious.

Thanks - it seems like we're getting more real here. This is a great way to hone debate skills and practice calm answers. (although I am the first to admit, I've blown my top a couple of times...)

Good point about 'a's not lacking spirituality. I never stopped to consider that before.

Here's an add on- Why do we get so angry when people ask a straightforward hinest question? Not all of us are out to manipulate the masses into conversion.....

I'm interested in people, and what people believe about God tells you more about the believer than it does about God (irrespective of whether he/she exists).

Sometimes I feel the need to defend the right to hold my position, which is not the same as defending the position itself. It seems like much of the ground is taken up by literalist religionists on one end and and literalist atheists on the other, with not much space for those who accept neither position.

The "missing thing" is a sense of the value of mythos. Both literalist camps seem to see "myth" as a synonym for "lies". It's not - it's simply a different way of thinking about human experience, like art or literature... ....or music.

My beliefs are shaped partly by a liberal Christian upbringing, studies in science, and my work which brings me in close contact with lots of different sorts of people. Also literature and an amateur interest in theology, evolutionary psychology and sexual politics.

I'm not usually upset by people with religious beliefs, except when they use those beliefs as a justification for abuse.

There needs to be a separate Y!A section for this question.

Most of us aren't "searching" the religion section, we're providing the right answers to questions that otherwise wouldn't get 'em.

I also do enjoy honing my skills here. It's sometimes difficult to give calm, honest answers to questions based in astonishing ignorance (like those of the creationists), and it's really good practice to do so now and again.

I'm here to spread the word of "Bob," Eris, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster. This is also the outright looniest section of Yahoo Answers. The questions are more bizarre, the answers are wackier, and the people are way more "out there" than any other section.

A few questions have come up that pertain to my own spiritual beliefs, and I've answered them honestly. The rest of the time, I'm just here for the wackiness of it all.

Religion/Spirituality.

Spirituality is open for interpretation, and means something different to each person. For some, and in many dharmic religions, spirituality is about achieving complete understanding of self.

Religion is a tool that hinders spirituality.

Some are defending the faith. I'm merely very, very bored. All the hypocrites and ignorant people are actually kind of funny.

They have opinions about religious and spiritual matters.

Just because someone is an atheist doesn't mean they have no spirituality.

I'm more interested in debate and reading diverse viewpoints than defending my atheism.

Yep, I'm here because I know so many Christians will be here and I *secretly* want them to convert me.

And YOU'RE here because you know that atheists come here and you *secretly* want them to convince you of reality.
