Tobacco is listed as harmful to birds. Whether or not they mean smoke or the leaves I'm unsure.

However, SMOKING is extremely harmful to your bird, as are the chemicals that are in cigars and cigarettes. If you are smoking close enough to your bird for her to get to an ashtray, then everytime you light up, you are harming your bird. Scented candles, potpori, areosols, sprays, non-sticke cookware...all of these things pollute the air and are harmful to birds.

Don't smoke near your bird. Period. Don't smoke in another room and assume it is far enough away. Birds are sensitive.

To give her a toy she will love, wrap some timothy hay (available at most pet stores) in a plain white paper towel like a cigar. Add some healthy treats like almond slivers and banana chips inside. Your bird will still get that great foraging activity she loves, with healthy things for her to chew on on eat as a reward.

I would not let your bird near the cigarettes as the nicotine in tobacco is a toxin. I also would not allow smoking in my home, around my birds, since this is bad for people and especially for birds with their sensitive respiratory systems.

Never, never, never smoke in the house if you have a bird. Second hand tobacco smoke is bad for everyone, including pets. Avian veterinarians say that tobacco smoke can cause chronic eye problems, skin irritation and respiratory disease, such as coughing, sneezing and sinusitis. When a bird stands on a hand of a smoker, nicotine from the smoker’s fingers can be absorbed by the skin of the bird’s feet, which can lead to contact dermatitis. So if you do choose to smoke outside, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap before handling your bird. Some veterinarians believe that tobacco smoke may be a contributing factor in feather plucking. Please do not smoke around your birds, or let others smoke around your birds. Again, if you do smoke, wash your hands thoroughly before handling your birds.

Tobacco will hurt your bird a lot. I assume that you smoke in the house? Just like the others said, that is very bad. birds have VERY sensitive respiratory systems, and anything like smoke, scented candles, certain cleaning products etc. can kill your bird. take your bird to an avian certified vet (find one near you here: www.aav.org/vet-lookup ) to make sure there is not too much harm done to your bird. never ever smoke in the same house as your bird because you will kill her!!! please don't give her access to the tobacco and at the very least, step outside to smoke. hope this helps and good luck!

Hi Karen, As you know i feed the birds in my garden. I find them endlessly fascinating (and hungry) I am very surprised at some of the things on your list and will certainly be a lot more careful in future! I usually feed my birds on peanuts and seed from the pet shop, along with fatty mixtures in the winter months. Thanks for the information very useful to know and I am off now to do some research of my own.

YES!!!!!!! It will hurt your birds!!! Even the tobacco/nicotine residue on your hands can hurt the bird!

Do not smoke around your bird and do not allow her to come in contact with it again. You are drastically lowering her expected lifespan by doing this!

If ingested the nicotine can cause death in such a small animal. Their metabolisms are faster. I would discard of the butts and put my fags in a safe place, just to be on the safe side. Have a tweet year
