Good idea, if not because of the ecological issues, just to put a stop to the total public ripoff by the power companies. I live in a wilderness area 6 miles from town, but I do have PUD power. Here are the rules (in order of priority) :
1) Do not under ANY circumstances use electricity for heating or cooking. Throw away electric heaters and cook stove. I use the new high efficiency catalytic propane space heaters (Coleman makes a good one). Propane, even at $2.00 a gallon is 75% cheaper than electricity per BTU. Trade your electric stove for a gas or propane model, (most modern gas stoves can use either with a simple adjustment)
2) Toss out the electric hot water heater, it is the other biggest waste of money and electricity. Go to a gas or propane unit. The cost of hot water is less than half that heated by electricity.
3) replace all light bulbs with the new florescent units. What uses 100 watts to run with a conventional incandescent (glowing element) bulb takes only 20 watts for the same amount of light with florescent (and they last longer). This cuts light cost by 75%.

The water flowing over our dams (Pacific Northwest) is the same free water that was there 50 years ago when the dams were built. The cost of power has increased 4 X the cost to produce, but that water flowing over the dams is still as free today as it was back then. THAT is patently criminal, and NOT a function of political parties.

I have reduced my power consumption to the bare essentials…. Refrigerator, freezer, computer, TV. I even use a portable (gas driven) generator to drive power tools when I’m building stuff, the gas way cheaper than the electricity used. The only thing you absolutely positively need full time electric power for, truth be known, is refrigerator and freezer, absolute necessities in the modern world.

Use clothing for climate control rather than aircon and heating. If it is cold then put more clothes on. If it is hot use a fan instead of aircon. Use energy saver lightbulbs. Shower with a friend. Watch less TV.

Call the power company and have them come out and disconnect your electricity.
Then call the water company and have them disconnect your water (pumping water and maintaining pressure takes huge amounts of energy!)
Then call the phone company and have them disconnect your phone.
Get rid of anything you have that's powered by batteries.
Don't use your car either.
