A person would want to know why your cat needs to gain weight. A cat of 10 or 12 could be losing weight due to metabolic disorders (diabetes or hypethyroidism). Those problems are addressed with medication - not a weight-gaining food.
I have a 13 yr old female cat who is frightenly (to me) thin. She was declared in perfect health by the vet when the blood work was done for her. She is not a small cat by any means and she will weigh in at slightly more than 7 lbs. She has good energy, bright eyes and a healthy coat.
Innova is a very good quality cat food. When I used it with my cats they all gained weight. I think it is the potatoes in it (which I question is good for cats, OK for dogs.) She might "bulk up" on that and the vet needs to check her health to make sure there is not a health reason she is thin.

You should be able to find a special high-calorie food at the vet's office. Some people recommend Iams or Science Diet, but I never could get a cat to eat those.
If your cat is also undernourished otherwise, you might even try kitten chow.
Good luck!

My cat got to be very skinny and then on a whim I switched her to the canned food from Trader Joe's. She gets one can a day as stated on the feeding directions. It's 49 cents a can. Whole Foods has their canned food for the same price and it's good as well. She looks a lot healthier than when she was on Friskies and has a nice little tummy again.

I think the best thing to do is to call up or visit your local vet. They can tell you a healthy type of food to make your cat gain the weight it needs, yet it will stay healthy.

Hi Kelly...adult cats who are thin can be as a result of either metabolic disorders such as hyperthyroidism and the like and need to be evaluated to rule out any medical problems. If your cat suddenly has lost weight it is more URGENT to have them seen as this is indicative of a possible life-threatening condition which can be manageable if caught early enough.

i have a 15yr old blind cat that only weighs 6lbs...we found her in october and we are having a hard time trying to get her to gain weight...some of the things that i have found that she will eat is broiled chicken breast cut up...also canned chicken and tuna (too much tuna isnt good because it is high in magnesium which causes urinary tract crystals) so tuna only once in awhile, but someone told me to try meat flavored baby food and i was thinking to myself she would never eat it and today i bought beef in gravy its really ground up meat and you wouldnt believe how much she loved it they also have turkey, veal and chicken flavors so try it ...im hoping she can put on a little bit of weight by eating it and alternating the broiled chicken and tuna as well good luck
