Three of the groomsmen in our wedding came from out of state, and we didn't pay for their lodging or transportation.
2 of them stayed at our house on the Thursday before the wedding and they split the cost of the rental car and hotel room for the other 2 nights.
We did pay for their breakfasts, lunches, and dinners (and drinks!) while they were here for our wedding.
I don't think you have to. It can get very expensive!

It's customary to pay for their lodging and meals. Atleast that's what has been the custom in my family for nearly 50 years.

I have been an out of town wedding attendent, and the bride and groom have never paid for anything, except a small gift, which is customary. If they accepted the honor of being in your wedding, then they accept the costs that go along with it.

I must know some cheap people. I've been in weddings out of town, and never had the wedding couple pay for anything for me. I think it is not necessary, and if you do not have the means, I am sure your close friends and family will understand.
