Go and talk with the people at your local shelter and/or humane society. Tell them your specific wants and needs; they not only have experience in dealing with many kinds of dogs, but they also have examples of most of them right there for you to get to know. You may want to volunteer yourself.
My dog is a "rescue" - and I can't imagine ever being without him. Giving a shelter dog a "forever home" has many rewards, but the best is just having him with me all the time.
Best of luck to you.

FIrst off if , do you want an indoor dog for the city? If so, you want a small dog because they were bred for being indoor dogs and have many advantages over big dogs. They live longer, less vet bills generally, less food and cleanup, less exercise neccessary, better watch dogs (more alert) etc.etc.
Then do the research on small dogs. Poodles, sji tzus, terriers, etc. I have a mix terrier / poodle and he is the best dog I've ever known.
Most big dogs were bred for certain jobs like herding, retrieving, sled pulling, hunting, dog fighting etc. I believe that these dogs ned a lot more consideration for what they were bred for. You should play ball with a lab for a couple hours a day, run a Husky on your bike for 2 hours a day, and herding dogs should be in dog agility classes. They were not meant to be cooped up all day.

OK.. my 2 cents ... check with greyhound adoption. Being 11 and gone for school during the day house training a dog is tough business. Our dogs were house trained in a couple of days, because of all the training they had been through already. I am going to assume that you want to take responsibility in taking care of the dog. We have adopted 3 greyhound over the years. They are 2-5 years old when you adopt one. They are inside dogs since they do not tolerate hot or cold very well. We adopted one at 2 and she is a hoot, she loves to play and sleeps with my son. They can be described as lazy when they aren't out, but when they get going...LOL. They are amazing to watch them run if you go to a fenced in park. They can be friendly, they are usually good around kids, although they may be shy at first around a family.. When my kids where younger, about your age, they would get on the roller blades and have the greyhound on a leash and go flying down the street. There are several website that you can check out if you are interested. One of our dogs, Velvet, raced for several years and I was able to get her racing name and look up the races that she won. Good luck.

A nice cross-breed would be ideal. They are not highly strung, and in my experience I have found they are faithful and not domineering. I would have a lady dog every time, as they tend to be more placid. He/she will still need their exercise, and when you are there, you can train them with the basic commands: stop! sit! walk on! etc. This way, they will learnt to wait and listen to you before crossing the road, etc. I had a terrier x collie and we rescued her when she was 8 weeks old. I was at home all day at that time, and was able to spend time with her. Because we were lucky to get a very young dog, I was able to train her and she always wanted to please. She was a lovely, medium-sized dog and was loved by everyone! She lived until she was 14 years old, when she became senile and died. The only regret I have is that I didn't take her to agility classes, as she was so agile and such a 'fun dog'. She especially loved a game of football and frisbee! Good luck in your choice.

it's alright that you're 11. i got a small yorkie when i was 8, and shes a tough little dog. she loves everybody and everybody loves her. she doens't have to go to the vet for anything, but annual check-ups and she loves to go on walks. but she was a homeless dog on the street, so we rescued her in some way. please rescue a dog from the shelter. i'm sure you'll find a dog that will melt you're heart. you'll be saving a life. you will feel good about that and the dog will love and appreciate you so much more, its unbeliveable. good luck!
