To be righteous means to be just and morally upright. That may involve a certain respect and deference or attitude of stewardship towards living creatures. But you can't be kind to every animal because they may eat your lunch. Does it make sense to be kind to an animal about to kill you? Doesn't mean you have to show flagrant disregard for their lives, in fact doing so may cause you to be attacked in the first place.

Treating animals as superior to humans is a case when it is definitely not righteous.
