To be sociable is to be approachable and be willing to approach. If you are shy or have inhibitions this becomes a problem and some see you as unsociable.
The way to overcome this is to read a lot and gain confidence in knowledge of things in every day life. For example keep up with the news, read up on religious differences ( not to become a bible basher) to understand the differences in views and culture.
Have a hobby that you can share information about.Go to group functions, dancing, concerts, plays, listen to pop music and be aware of the current trends in music
Once you have developed and refined some this knowledge you will find that you will have attained a degree of confidence to debate and discuss your views with others. This is the opening to becoming more sociable and people will begin to seek you out for inclusion in their parties and functions.

Pick a social "hero" to look up to. Either someone you know or someone famous for their good social skills, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore seem like they can work a crowd, you know? Try to emulate how they might approach a social situation. Act confident even if you don't feel it. Ask open ended questions...the other people are probably trying to do the same thing. Keep up on current events and try not to go too far into Paris Hilton style social. Good luck.

Ewww... Why in the world would you want to do that?
Trust me... Humanity, as a whole... Is rather disappointing concerning any expectations you may have of them.... Evolve beyond the need to deal with their crap and make yourself a part of some grand scheme drama, and you'll be a much happier person!
"People, people who need people, are the luckiest people in the world."
Barbara Streisand... is a whack Job to ever utter this nonsense out loud!
"Happiness is knowing that you do not necessarily require it to be happy."
Sartre.
Now THAT... is more like it!
Believe me... Social settings usually don't serve you well in helping you to enjoy yourself more. I happen to be the only company I enjoy. It's everyone else I have problems with!
Read the Celestine prophecy... You are all the company you need. you already are... everything you think you need from interaction with anyone else...

get yourself out there, and start talking to people. join a club, go to a bar, the library, try and find things that you have in common with others rather than what divides you. don't think you have to talk about anything in particular, often what comes into your head may not be as bad as you might think. or something like that.
