In my opinion spanking is a firm smack on the back side with an open hand. But what you are having us listen to is a child being hit repeatedly with a weapon. This is not spanking this is abuse. There Is a difference. It is unfair of you and anyone else using this web page as a stand point for anti spanking. This is an obvious case of abuse. Never mind the fact that some one was sick enough not only to do what was done but record this poor child and then place it on the Internet. In most homes a spanking for what ever the reason does not consist of a child being beat with a belt.
And I am willing to bet that in homes that spank a poor report card is not a good enough reason. So please if you are going to be anti spanking that's all fine and well but remember spanking parents are against this kind of terrible abuse too so find a better argument or don't argue at all.

Well there is a need for discipline. And spanking is discipline. It is needed. NOT abusing..but discipline. I would say spanking for a bad report card is over the top..but there are plenty of situations that warrant it, if not require it for a healthy child.
You seem to be one of the people that try and treat your child like a friend instead of being a parent.
Which leads to criminals. I honestly believe it has been the major cause in the decline of our society.
There have also been studies that undisciplined youth will tend to be unruly in a very short time.
In fact they discovered this after they started watching elephants in Africa that they released as babies into the wild without a male parent figure to discipline them. They would cause havoc on the society. They were killing rhinos and causing amok. When introduced to a Sr male that had discipline... All the problems soon ended.
It's just the way things are..

abuse is different from spanking, spanking should be by hand and not out of anger. If I have to swat my son, afterwards I tell him I love him and forgive him but I will not tolerate that action ( whatever hes being punished for )

I see kids running in the store where all the parent does is empty threat them and these are the kids yelling and screaming and having tantrums cause they cant have their way

I dont think spanking should be used for bad report cards. I think the parent needs to sit down with the teacher and child and see what the problem is and mayebe get the child a tutor

That isn't spanking, it is beating. For a start.
No one spanks their child for poor grades. Good grief. How counter productive is that?
There are worse things than being smacked on the backside. There's being ignored (my mother's favourite method of torture), grounded (I know my daughter would prefer being smacked to missing a party) and my own favourite, docking their pocket money. Smacking is easy and quick and it has its place.
And by the way - I've been encouraging my daughter to get good grades - without spanking her/beating her - and I can't say it's worked. If anyone knows the answer, I'd love to hear it.

We don't spank for bad grades. More importantly we DON'T taunt our children when we do. There is nothing wrong with a good spanking, this mom could have done with out all the taunting, and would be better served using the spanking for more direct misbehavior, not bad grades. Also we do not use a belt, however I know parents who do, that their business. Other then that, that's about how they sound. :(

PS, why record something like that??? I don't get it.

I am pro-spanking . I do not think it is appropirate to spank for bad grades. Conduct marks--yes. But not a poor report card.

I would still say that spanking is a very good discipline tool when used calmly, decisively and when warranted. I don't believe in spanking out of anger or frustration...like this woman clearly is doing. She keeps hitting and yelling, hitting and yelling; not using spanking correctly and doing a lot of harm to her child.

I don't know the circumstances behind this audio, but I can tell you that it doesn't make me feel bad about spanking my child for egregious behavior. I do, however, feel bad for that poor child who is not getting loving discipline, instead, she's getting hit out of anger. Two very different things.

Not fair. This child could be genuinely trying to get her grades up kids don't fail on purpose. Unless the child was failing because of misbehavior then spanking them just for doing poorly in school just isn't right to me.

I think it's pretty harsh. If spanking is used it should be a last resort. I think a better solution for the report card would be taking privledges away.
