this is what I did, I had just had a baby and needed my sons crib, he was 19 months when I did this. At first I put the crib matress on the floor and let him play on it and roll around on it.

then a few days later, I moved his crib to the other side of the room, placed the matress where his crib was. HE laid down but kept getting up BUT heres what I did. I sat in the room with him, in the dark and ignored him ( sense of security I was there ) every ten minutes I would move farther away from him. NO matter what ignore them( unless they are hurt of course ) Til finally I was on the other side of his gate, ever since that night he has slept in a bed , NOW since I had to use the crib I gave my son our old full size matress without the box springs and he loved it, lots of room to roll and play and I put the crib matress back into the crib for my daugther

now that hes older, he has the box springs under the matress, not a problem, good luck

Whenever you think that they are ready! My mom switched my twin sisters to a toddler bed before they were even 1 1/2 years of age!

My son is two and sleeps in a full size bed with rails on the side. It really depends on how much rolling around your toddler is. If you get you some rails to put on the side of the bed (you can buy them at Wal-Mart), he should be okay at the age of 1.

As someone else mentioned, there is no certain age. It depends on your child. To make it more exciting and less scary, let your child pick their bed and/or sheets out him/herself. Then they won't be as reluctant to sleep in it. Some kids need coaxing and some just hop right in! With my oldest, I transitioned her at 15 months. This time I'm going to wait longer with my second, especially since my youngest is REALLY small for her age. Good luck!

when your child does or tries to climb out of the crib. My son was almost 2.

There is no "right" age for it. That tranistion is often a challenge, so be sure you provide for the child's safety, and be prepared to take him back to his new bed repeatedly until he learns to stay in it all night.
