I do believe that the overzealous Christians give the rest of us a really bad name. Here on campus (Indiana University), there's a group of fundamentalist Christians that accuse EVERYONE of going to hell, even for things like wearing a sweater and jeans. Those same people stole the Gay Pride flag from the front of a gay bar in town. They reject anyone who is not Christian.
Their presence on campus sometimes makes me apprehensive about telling people that I'm a Christian because I don't want them to assume that I'm like the crazy Christians.
Most of the Christians that I know are nothing like that, I think they represent an overwhelming minority of Christians.

No the "fundies" are the best kind of Christians. Here is an article I wrote some time ago for the county paper on the topic:
---
I was recently called a Christian fundamentalist with a derogatory tone, but when one looks up the definition of fundamentalist and the doctrine of Christ, there is no way it can be an insult to call someone a Christian fundamentalist.
Fundamentalist is defined as a, "movement [or person] advocating return to traditional principles." So what is traditional Christianity? It isn't the Crusades, Salem witch trials, or abortion clinic bombings. Those things are against the doctrines of Jesus and thus they are not fundamentalist actions.
Pursuing the teaching of Jesus, as found in the Bible, is a fundamentalist approach, and Jesus taught, "Love your enemy" (Matthew 5:43). Is there any system more loving than that of Christ? Pause and reflect.
Jesus spoke, "when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets" (Matthew 6:2). Is there any system more humble than that of Christ? Pause and reflect.
Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead and fed the hungry. The blind saw the lame dance joyfully while the mute sang praises. Is there any system more redeeming than that of Christ? Pause and reflect.
Most important of all - forgiveness is possible through Christ and salvation is available for everyone no matter our faults. Is there any system more forgiving than that of Christ? Pause and reflect.
Is the doctrine of Jesus based on his own beliefs or is it the word of God? Jesus spoke, recorded in John 8:28, "I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me."
Christian fundamentalists follow the teaching of Jesus, and thus the very teaching of God. In that case, being called a fundamentalist Christian is a great thing! I wish to be nothing else other than a fundamentalist Christian! You should too. Pause and reflect.

So far i've met 4 people in my life that ALMOST, and I stress almost cuz i'm not, made me want to be a Christian as well. They are the true definition of a christian, and so many other christians would benefit immensely from taking after them.

Yes I agree that there are some very good Christians out there who are great people. It's wrong to condemn them all just because a small vocal minority of them act like arses. Same goes with Wicca, Judaism, Islam, atheism...all religious (or nonreligious) paths have their share of asswipes who give the path a bad name. We just have to remember that just because we've run into one or two jerks who happen to be ___ that not all people who are ___ are like that.

I agree with you. And yes fundies do give christians a bad name. Just like the anti-theists give atheists a bad name. We get blamed for all their bad deeds.

90% are probably loving, caring and for the most even rational people. I honestly have no problems with Christians, even if being Dutch makes me only know a few Christians in my daily life.
And yes, like every group, bad apples tend to give a group a bad name.

Thank you -- finally, someone who doesn't tar all Christians with the brush of fanaticism. There are indeed many Christians who follow the example of their loving and compassionate Lord. There are also many brilliant Christians who believe that God gave them their mind and expects them to use it.
I respect you for your open-mindedness, as well.

The implication of your question is false, because if you really knew what Christianity was about, you would know that Christianity and fanaticism are mutually exclusive, i.e. you are either one or the other.
Very similar to how Islamic jihadists or terrorists are not really Muslims.
The term "fundamentalist" or "fundie" has no real meaning, for the reason given above, and was created for the sole purpose of demonizing any and all Christians not afraid to stand up for their beliefs.
Unfortunately in our increasingly secular and liberal country and society, liberals and/or atheists have succeeded in this goal.
