Using XP, I tried to copy a 4.4 gig file from my main hard drive to an external usb hard drive which shows 110 gig free. I got an error msg that there is not enough disk space. Defragging did not help. What could the problem be.

You're probably using an old, Microsoft filesystem like FAT.

Make sure your external drive has a filesystem that can handle 4.4Gb filesizes. Something like NTFS will do if you're using Windows XP.

it may not accept its file type or when converted to the portable harddrive it may take more space or could have a virus
