Well, I'm a Giant Schnauzer breeder....I think good breeders are ones who are trying to improve the breed.
I guess I don't understand your question.

Just like any other breed, there are breeders and then there are breeders. Unfortunately, with the popularity of the Great Dane, there seem to be more and more backyard breeders and puppy mills. And plenty of flashy websites. Be aware that any really good breeder will have their puppies spoken for, before they are ever born.
Any breeder with good dogs has a lot of time and money invested in them. Food, health testing and vet expenses are not cheap! It costs them just as much to breed a show puppy as a pet puppy, because they are going to get both in every litter.
Why don't you enquire about a rescue Dane? I've had several Danes from rescue, and they have all been wonderful dogs, devoted and loving. They are what caused me to go into rescue myself.

i have been fortunate enough to deal with only good dane breeders. if you are anywhere near wichita falls tx or are willing to travel there, there is a place called Brentwood Danes Kennels. I don't know the # off hand or if they have any available, but we got a BEAUTIFUL male last year and he is now 180-185 and probably the best tempered dog you could ever meet. His best friend is the neighbor's toy poodle. He wouldn't hurt it for anything. Anyway, this couple is so awesome, you almost want to take them home with you! If the breeder is an a$$ to you, I'd think they wouldn't treat the dog any differently. I've been thinking of getting another one myself, and I live in GA, but I would be willing to go back if they have any.

How did you approach these breeders? Was the first words out of your mouth how much?? When did you approach them at a show??
Responsible breeders of any breed are very protective of their breed..they only want the best possible homes for their puppies...sometimes they may come off as rude, but you need to understand where they are coming from..they have put up with far too many irresponsible owners, irresponsible BYB/mills and other issues. They have watched irresponsible breeders ruin many years of hard work by breeding dogs with no health testing, bad temepraments, that don't meet breed standards, etc. "show" breeders don't just breed for "show" They breed for the healthiest, most even tempered puppies that meet the breed standard. They know that even Ch to Ch breeding may result in a litter with no show potential puppies. They spend many hours researching pedigrees and working with their dogs. They have seen people buy for all the wrong reasons without any knowledge about the breed they are buying...There is so much about responsible breeders and breeding that the average person has no idea about..it isn't as simple as BYB/Mills make it look.
****when looking for a pet only it is important to buy them from a responsible breeder this means one who does show, who breeds for breed standard, who temperament tests, who does health tests (not just simple vet exams), who knows their breed, who knows about any health issues they may be prone to..you NEVER buy a puppy from a person who breeds for pets only...these are irresponsible breeders and have little to no knowledge of what they are breeding and will sell any puppy to anyone with the $$$ these are the people who give purebreds a bad rep and breed with no regard to color standard, conformation standrad, temeprament standard or pedigree********
**** A well bred Dane from a responsible breeder can and often does live into their teens. The average age for a healthy well bred Dane from a responsible breeder is 10 -12 years..the average age from an irresponsible breeder who breeds simply becasue they can with no regard to anything is 6-8years..quite a difference******

If you gain the trust of a reputable show breeder, then perhaps you can find one that is a great pet that isn't suitable for breeding. They'd be relieved to find a good home for an animal that they can't use.
I'm wondering why you're asking SHOW breeders when all you want is a pet?
And, ditto on the "rescue dog" suggestion -- not everyone is a Dane person, and if you're a Dane person, then perhaps you could open your home to an orphan?

If it's someone who is showing their animal, is working to improve the breed (which requires that they know what the breed is supposed to be doing and is getting outside opinions about how their dog measures up), is knowledgeable about the genetic issues of the breed and how to reduce the chances of perpetuating genetic problems, knows how to search for the proper mate to offset any shortcomings in their dog, is willing to take back ANY dog they've EVER produced if for some reason it needs a home, and is responsible enough to realize when a dog should be culled from the breeding pool (i.e. spays and neuters non-breeding-quality animals)...
...then I generally don't have a problem with breeders.
If it's someone who's throwing Fido and Fluffy together to make puppies to sell on the roadside or on the internet, or someone who wants Fifi to have "just one litter" so she can "experience motherhood", or if it's someone who thinks that their mutt is some new "designer breed" and should be bred because she cost a whole bunch of money, or someone who wants to "have puppies around the house", or someone who has to ask things like "Where do I find a mate for my dog?" "How long is my dog pregnant for?" "Does anyone want puppies?" and "How much can a Boxer/Lab/Schnauzer/Chihuahua puppy sell for?"...
...then they are the scum of the earth, because they are contributing to and perpetuating the overpopulation problem that results in MILLIONS of dogs and cats being killed each and every year.

sorry I don't know any ...I have met several breeders - some being very friendly and knowledgeable....while others not so.
I would suggest finding a good one ...try the AKC website for a referral.
