In many pictures, they portray Jesus as a tall white guy with flowing blond hair. This is true especially with the Spanish people. Honestly, Jesus was a freaking Arab! he should be portrayed as a brown guy. I always wondered about it

Are you insane? Americans could never admit to believing that their God is Arabian.

I personally love the irony though.

Hi - You are right about the skin tone and hair for a standard semite...but not all Hebrews were or are, of that complexion. On the other point, every civilization has a characterization which they can associate with. Realism in art is just one perspective. You have to look at the pervaisive artistic attitudes, predominant artistic expressions, of each culture and era...if all art was supposed to be realism, then what is abstract art all about? What is impressionism? What is cubism? There is no set standard for what art is supposed to be (although there have been a lot of people who considered themselves "authorities" and wanted/want to have a very narrow definition of what art portrayal is). All you will ever really be able to say for sure is, there is a possibility that Jesus had olive skin or tan skin and dark hair and eyes...but you won't know this for sure and nobody else does either, because there is no description of what he looked like that exists. One other thing - semitic people, including the arabs, are considered by anthropologists, to be caucasians. This means, Jesus was not black and he was not asian...but! There is nothing "wrong" with portraying him that way, if people find that portrayal easier to identify with him. I am fairly certain, that Jesus would not care how he was portrayed physically to the world - it was his message that he tried to get into the world, not his appearance. So if Jesus is not offended by it, why should you be?

He was born in Bethlehem.
Remember, O little town of Bethlehem.

He was a Jew, born in Israel.
He looked like a Jew.
He did not look like the pictures that were painted by Romans.
They painted Jesus with the same facial structure as they had.
But the artists used models from Rome to use for the painting.

That land was never Arab land.

Painters used people around them as models. For anything depicting gods or goddesses, they used the best looking. So the images of Jesus and Mary show us what was considered the most attractive (and available locally) at the time of the painting. Where it's been documented, we know that quite a few of the male models were gay and many of the women were prostitutes.

And people think that art history is boring. ;-)

Jesus was actually of Jewish heritage. He was from Nazareth. He's portrayed by an artist as white! He died for you, so why does it make any difference what color your Saviour's skin was, is , or might be! Jesus loves us unconditionally! Let's love Him Too!

Actually you are very right my friend. the reason they portray him as white is because they really did not want brown people to know what color he was, they wanted to keep us in the dark. remember he was not Arab but he was born in a European country so there for his skin would be dark. and at that time the earth was almost one body of land. the Bible says that his feet was as copper and his hair was as lambs wool and he had peer sing dark eyes. that sounds black to me.

I am an Israeli and if you go there you will find the majority are ashkenazi jews with olive complexion, while the S'phardic have a darker complexion.

Nonetheless, cameras weren't working back then.

Why is Jesus portrayed as a white guy?

STUPIDITY MOSTLY!

Easier for people to "relate to " a person of their own colour, etc..
