I'm not pregnant though I noticed that when my friends became pregnant their hair grew ridiculously long - their fingernails, too. I asked and they said that they took prenatal vitamins and I was given some. I was wondering if it's a hormone when you're pregnant or the prenatals that help your hair grow? I trim my hair often so it will grow but it just doesn't.. help! Any other ideas as well?

prenatal vitamins will only help your hair grow if you are not getting enough vitamins to begin with (which most people dont)...also dont get your hair trimmed it is a myth that it will make it grow faster

Here is the deal with prenatal vitamins and hair/nail growth. The vitamins do not actually make your hair/nails grow faster. This is what they do. The vitamins make your hair/nails stronger inturn making the breakdown process shorter. Because your hair/nails are getting so much nutrients, as they grow out, they will be stronger and make it seem as though your hair/nails are growing faster because they are not breaking or splitting as fast as they normally would. If you find that your hair is still not growing after a certain point, this could be a result of your gene makeup. Some people have a natural hair growth point, meaning that it will only grow to a certain length and stop. While other peoples hair can just keep growing longer and longer. I had a friend who took prenatal vitamins for the same reason and she found that, regardless of the vitamins, her hair would not grow past a certain point, but it wasn't stringy and split at the ends anymore. As far as trimming is concerned, you need to do that. On the average, a persons hair will grow a half an inch each month. To gain growth you should have your hair cut every other month. Over a year you should have an extra 3 inches in growth, as long as you are only cutting off a half an inch every other month. Please do not rule out the importance of trimming your hair, especially if you use heat on it everyday. Blow drying and curling on a daily basis causes a lot of damage and breakdown, and trimming your hair cuts down on that. My backgound knowledge on this; I am a cosmetologist/hairstylist.
