We've seen that a sizable percentage of the USA's citizens want the USA to lose.

Then again, in the American Revolution, 1/3 of the colonists wanted to remain English / British citizens. Their flight at the end of the war was instrumental in founding Toronto.

In the American Civil War, the "Copperheads" in the north fought Lincoln every step of the way (they were Dems too).

There was a significant anti-war party in 1940, and while a greatly lessened number, all during WW2.

Patriotism simply the act of loving ones Country. However the definition goes far beyond this simple quote. There was a time in our history when it was realized that an act of war committed against ones country or its countryman meant an act of war against the individual citizen. This meaning has been lost in our long slumber. We Americans have become lazy and soft. We are more concerned with the battles over abortion and taxation, welfare and gay rights then the very concern over freedom and the right to live and believe as one sees fit.

This argument which our country is engaged upon is not about if the war was a righteous war. It is in fact an argument about political parties and who can make the most political points for their respective political party. How pathetic a principal for a basis of argument. Instead of arguing if we should use more or less air power or artillery we argue if we should cut funding the war to shame the president or to gain political capital. We argue about if we should impeach the President or discuss his ignorance.

Yes, the left wing have leveled attacks against the right wing but they are not at all at fault. It is the right wing and the President who engaged us upon this war and failed to remember the lessons of the past. One cannot succeed in war if one is not willing to destroy the one who he fights. It was Presidnet Bush who wanted to impress the world of our might without breaking too many eggs.

Therefore to answer your question has the war in Iraq affected patriotism in America. I say it was not the war but the people of this country.

I believe it has caused a REAL dialogue about what patriotism means. To me it does not mean to blindly follow political decisions but the FREEDOM to have a differing opinion. To me it does mean supporting the men and women sent to Iraq by the administration. I, however, passionatley believe that we can support them best by bringing then home.

I am insulted by some comments I hear like - "if you don't support the president then go live in another crountry" or "they are over there fighting for our freedom" (while these same people dismantle my freedoms) or "if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops". These sound bites make me crazy. I want to have open honest dialogues with people but it needs to be okay to have different opinions and beliefs. I am a citizen of the U S A and I deserve to be here as much as any one else.

Great question - very thought provoking.

i'll constantly have delight in my u . s . a . and exhibit my patriotism to the adult males and female that have and proceed to combat for our rights and our u . s . a .. The war in Iraq has shaken my faith in our government. I help the combat against terrorism and the act of attacking the folk in charge for the devastating acts of September eleventh. i do no longer help the lies and the deceptive advice. The war in Afganistan replaced into proceeding to search out Al Qaeda and the Taliban who have been in charge. some how the war shifted right into a liberation of the Iraqi people. on the same time as our adult males and ladies have been battling and dieing in Iraq, Al Qaeda has grown and unfold to a number of greater international locations. the international has seen how the yank government took action and went to war without the consent or help of the United international locations or our Allies. I shuttle to Europe oftentimes and resembling usa has been broken. i wish interior the destiny our image, our power, and our patriotism could be restored.

Patriotism is like religion. I becomes embedded in one's mind and allows you to do stupid things without thought or morals. Like a lot of zealots highly patriotic people believe that anyone who takes stand opposite to their's and should be shot. There are, of course, less fundamentalist patriotic people who can think beyond their patriotism and thoughtfully think past their embedded beliefs and understand a person can hold a different view and still be a patriot. A much better scenario then blind following.

I'm not as sure as it is the far right and the far left inserting their minority ideas with propaganda that influences our patriotism.

The Anti-war far left it seems will sit back and hope for failure because it would help their party rise to power.

The far right is steadfast for victory not only because they want America safe but just as distasteful as the left they also want their power within government increased.

I feel this has exposed how flawed our system is.
If we could vote and have second and third choices on each ballot instead of only voting for one our government would have yet another check and balance that would insure a more moderate way of governing.

Propaganda is tearing the thread of America to shreds and this is one of the Extremists goals. In that respect they are winning.

Goddess though I don't share your political beliefs I share your thoughts on useless name calling. Truly your experience proves my point.
