PDF stands for "Portable Document Format" that was created by Adobe Systems. It's main purpose was to display two-dimensional text documents that were independant of platform (e.g. it works on PC, Mac or Linux just as well) and also be resolution independant (e.g. it looks the same no matter what your screen resolution or print resolution is).
Because the PDF file can contain all the fonts, text, graphics and images within itself, they are largely used in eBook publishing and other document distribution that needs to have the document keep the same appearance for everyone who opens it.
