He is very protective of my family especially when we are dog walking. He is well socialised, but when me or my daughter go to pet another dog or one goes to close to us he warns them off. does anyone have any hints or advice about what i could do to make this easier on him to accept another dog in the house.

First, you need to socialize this dog with other dogs - find some good obedience classes and take him.

Second, if you get another dog, you'd be better off with a female puppy. When you bring a new dog home, introduce them in adjacent rooms with a baby gate in between. This way they can see and most importantly to a dog, get each other's scent. When your dog is calm about the new dog (and don't 'rush this), you can put them in a room together - supervised.

Make sure your dog is always greet first, petted first, fed first, etc. If you don't rush the introduction and work on his socialization skills in classes, you should be ok. Dogs also gain confidence from succeeding at something (which should help him), plus you'll be letting him know that you're in charge, not him, and it sounds like he needs that, too.

Best to go for a ***** then. Also make sure that you feed, pet and greet him first so that they know what order they have in the pack. I got a second dog when the first was 3 yrs. i got another boy and they were not too bad til we got the third, a *****. The two boys would be ok though til the little terrier decided he wanted to go at the doberman. It was hard work at times but now we just have the ***** and one dog and they are fine.

I hate to tell you but your dog is socialized as the leader of the pack, your family. The dog is not protecting you but rather showing dominance, which will be continued with any dog brought into the house.

Get a smaller younger dog, so that he can be in charge and it'll learn who is boss very quickly, it may well help the over protectiveness knowing there is some other dog to share the burden on guarding his pack. obviously spend lots of time with them together before leaving them alone as well, so its a holiday from work to spend settling the second dog in. Good Luck! 2 dogs make great friends and companions

bit of a gamble really. It will upset the status quo badly, and could be greatfun and company for him if you get it right, or a distaerous nightmare for everyone if you get it wrong. I would get a female in a smaller, non -threatening breed. For example, I have a springer spaniel male, and rescued an older Cavalier King Charles female, that was fine. She actually mothers him! There's no way I would have got away with another large male though.

i would ring round a few behaviour schools and see if any will work with him.... take him to these to get him socialised and they will also teach you how to handle the problems that you already have... make sure your dog is behaving as you want him to before you introduce another or he may just teach the new dog the same problems.

In my opinion, Start out with a puppy, something that will be on the more submissive side so that your dog can feel that it is still his home and doesn't have a reason to get defensive and bonding with him and your family might go smoother..

WTF. Why don't you just sit down with him and have a long quiet chat about bring a new member into the family. If he doesn't respond show him a size 9, right between the gonads.
