A lot of smokers I know started as young teens. It was probably a way of feeling more grown up and rebellious, and when you're that age, you can't comprehend being 30 let alone 60.
Aside from a casual cigarette here and there at a bar, I smoked for 3 very stressful months in my life. My marriage was falling apart, I was living with my mother who was very mentally abusive, and was in a job that was terrible. I remember literally thinking, I need something to get me through this until I can get my life on track. I can do drugs, drink, or smoke. I chose the lesser of the 3 evils, as I could go on break at work and smoke rather than get high or drunk.
Smoking is bad, but there is a calming relief you experience when you inhale the smoke and exhale it. Maybe you could get a similar weeker effect just by exercising controlled breathing, but nicotine does have an effect.

It is an addictive drug. It's been said it is more addicting than heroin. I believe that smokers at least once a day contemplate everything you have wrote.
It is not as easy as one thinks to quit. It is an easy drug to get and although it is becoming a big social no-no it is still accepted.
Smokers say they enjoy it. This is just a lie they tell themselves to justify the costs it has on your health, how bad you stink and the financial burden of smoking.
I have smoked for a very long time and I think about the fact it is killing me every time I light up. I have tried many times to quit and I do believe one of these times it will take.
I know I did not answer the question the way you wanted, but I can not believe anyone would be able to give you a logical or common sense answer as to why they smoke.

The presence of the fear of death tends to create the absence of the joy of life. Don't fear death. It's not your choice. You could be the healthiest person on the planet and still get killed in a freak car accident. I've been smoking for only 6 years now and I don't have any regrets about it. It is a choice that I made and that I continue to make. I accept the knowledge we know about smoking today and the dangers and hazards that will come of my body. However, it's something that I enjoy very much. The addiction is probably also a big part of why I smoke but I also smoke when I need a moment to rest or to think or just to relax. People around me know I smoke, but they put it aside because it doesn't necessarily make me a bad person. I don't believe it makes me a stupid person. I just have a different outlook on life as the "health-buffs" or you. I would rather spend 1 beautiful year with someone I love in full devotion than spend 100 years with them trying to keep everyone and everything safe. Why should we fear death? It's going to happen. No matter what. So do what you want to do. Make the most of what you have now. Be proud of yourself, be proud of your choices. Make love, make peace, make happiness.

I've already reported the spammer, someone else should too.
Back to your question. I think most people smoke because they're addicted. So you're probably thinking "well why did they start?!?"
I started smoking when I was 14 because I thought it was cool. By the time I was 15 I was addicted. By the time I was 17 I was trying to quit but never could. Now I'm 18, and am planning on quitting the day after tomorrow with a friend of mine. I think that a lot of people are in the same boat I am. They start because they think it's cool, and they're still smoking because they can't quit.

The same question can be asked about drug use, drinking, driving too fast or even just eating too much fast food. People will do what they do for their own reasons or for no reason at all. Trying to force them to change is ridiculous so I never bother with it. Just accept that people are what they are. So long as they aren't doing you any harm, leave them alone. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and try to tell them to stop smoking when I have a few bad habits of my own. Isn't there something from the bible that says "He who is without sin may cast the first stone"?

Addiction. Many smokers were not aware of the risks when they started.
Also, smoking was serve as a substitute for another oral fixation. It is common for members of AA to turn to smoking as at least cigarettes do not impair one;s judgment when operating heavy machinery or cause domestic violence, etc. Smoking is also a substitute for problem/emotional eating.
I have friends who do not "plan" on living to such a high age and thus do not care about their lungs in such a long term way.
Others simply have a skewed cost-benefit analysis ideals. Acceptance now outweighs health problems later.

No, it's not because they're stupid. They are addicted. I quit (twice) - the last time 6 years ago. And I'm not going to start again. Unfortunately, I'm not having such an easy time with the whole eating issue. Everyone (as some others have stated) has a vice ~ or more. I crave food when I'm stressed, bored, happy, etc. My husband craves cigarettes. They'll both kill us if we're not careful. Unfortunately, everyone *has* to eat, so I can't just quit cold turkey =) He might get cancer or emphysema, and I don't want to see that. I might get diabetes or obese (and I don't think he wants to see that, either).
What's your vice?

I smoke because I have epilepsy, my life sucks, and I'm hoping that I don't live to be 50, 60 or older. I know smoking isn't a good thing, that's why I do it. I also enjoy aggravating the non-smokers with my cigarette smoke.

Well, I have been a smoker for about 4 years now. I am 23 and i started around 18 or 19. I was always anti smoking, and my father smokes and i thought it was gross and i could always smell the kids at school whos parents smoked cause their clothes wreaked of it. Common sense tells me to stop smoking, and I have given it a lot of thought on trying to quit and what my life could be like in the future due to cigarettes. I smoke one pack, every two days. So that's 20 cigarettes in 48 hours. Still not safe, I know. The way I started was because my cousin and his friends smoked and we would go to parties, and they'd give me cigarettes when I was under the influence, when i asked them for one. It started out social smoking. Now the way I look at it is like this, I smoke because I like too. I know what the affects are, and I am okay with that. We live in a society today with so many things can cause so many cancers or kill you we all need to pick our poison. Alcohol causes liver damage and all kinds of health problems, and leads to drunk driving, which can cause fatalities. Do we have anti drinking ads on tv? Nope. We only have drink and drive and lose your liscense ads or adds similar. We have a high obesity rate in america, but do they put disclaimers on fast food commercials about, if you eat this regularly its bad for your health and can cause your arteries to close and can result in heart disease which in some cases is already herditary thus leading in heart failure or heart attacks. Even if i was a non smoker, theres always a place where i can go, such as a resturant that has a smoking and non smoking section, but the smoke is still in the building, i am technically breathin in second hand smoke it's just not that visable. If i chose to go out with friends who smoke, I am still around their smoke even if i am outside. If i live in a large city filled with pollution,, I am still breathing in the crud from the air, that could result in health problems as well. I like diet coke, which years ago they said artifical sweetners cause cancer. I use deoderant that has some kind of aluminum in it, that a nurse once told me, could cause cancer as well. I get in a car everyday and drive, trusting my own judgement, but I don't know the other people who are on the road with me. I don't know if they're a new driver, on their cell phone, or impaired by drugs or alcohol, yet i still drive. That could be a car accident, and I could die instantly. People know there is a certain risk to everything we eat, drink, or events we take part of in everyday life. If someone wants to smoke a cigarette, it's their choice, thus why we live in a free country and as adults are free to make any choice we please.
