I used to breed canaries, and no, they are not difficult at all. Let me give you a quick run down.
First of all, if you want a bird that sings, you have to get a male. The females only chirp. You dont need a pair. Canaries are not social birds and do not interact well together. Even males and females may fight outside of breeding season, so you are fine getting only one.
Get the largest cage that is practical for you. It will allow your bird more excercise. Place the cage in a bright area, but not in direct sun. Avoid drafts, too. If your bird is in a room where you keep the lights on late, cover his cage with a dark cloth at sunset. Long days will cause your bird to molt excessively.
As far as feeding goes, start with a good fresh seed mix. Dont buy seed in the grocery store, as it tends to be stale. Along with the seed feed dark fresh greens, like kale and brocolli. Avoid ice berg lettuce, as it can upset your bird's stomach. Whole grain bread like whole wheat or cornbread is good. Mixed cooked vegies went over very well with my birds, as did cooked sweet potato. An occasional wedge of hard boiled egg, including the shell is very good for your bird, but dont leave it in the cage more than an hour,so the egg doesnt spoil.
The song of a canary is a wonderful thing. Dont expect him to come out and sit on your finger, but he still can provide some wonderful company!

canaries are vary easy to take cake care of and breed. the males are happy and sing vary sweetly. i have one that for some reason is so tame he will sit on my finger, that is not the norm for a canary. clean cage, fresh water, a little gravel in the bottom of the cage is about all they need for sure. however they love a bit of apple every now and then. or a bit of endive. if your thinking of breeding then they will want some boiled egg.

i dont know much about canaries, but cockatiels arent hard to take careof.. mine are just like dogs now. they love attention and stick their necks out for you to pet them. they whistle a lot to.. i would pesonally say get a cockatiel. they run about 50 bucks through a breeder. so they arent bad on price. never get one out of a pet store. they arent tame. even those that say they are hand fed are still mean and not used to humans. no matter what kind of bird you get. go through a breeder that gives them lots of attention. they will be and all around better bird

All caged birds take dedication with training, proper feeding, appropriate toys, bathing, vet checks and socialization. Really do your research and have a tweet year.

It isn't difficult to take care of birds. It is time consuming and can be costly if they get sick.
Call some local breeders and ask if you can visit their aviary and ask them questions.
