I done baby sign with my now three year old twins, it really seemed to cut down on their frustration level. They were doing simple signs at 7 months, my son is not talking but is learning sign at his preschool class. His speech teacher said that he picks it up very quickly, he in turn teaches his twin sister.

Sign language is wonderful for children of all speech/language levels! I taught my daughter signs beginning when she was around 9 months old, and by 11mo she was signing back. It did cut down the frustration level of a non-talker, and even once she began talking, she still used signs as a form of communication. Signs are easier for toddlers to pick up because they are used with motor planning, which is easier for toddlers than speech. It also helps the family build a pattern of communication, which is an important ingredient in children learning to talk. The more words/signs you can give your child, the more you will get back. Keep it up, and soon you will see the same kind of results from your children's speech.

I used baby sign with my now 3 year old son... He was a 25 weeker and didn't talk at all until he was 2 1/2 ... It really seemed to help him be less frustrated and helped me too

My son knows some sign language he get less frustrated. I think it a good thing to learn with children.

My son was a very late talker didn't say a word until almost 3 so we put him into a signing class and it was wonderful! He fussed less because he could communicate with us and it helped him learn his words faster. I recommend it to all parents not just those of us with late talkers.

I never did with my children but my sister did. She seem to like it very well and her child signed until she was able to talk. Its a great way for babies to communicate.I only wish it was more popular when i had my kids.

Yep, my almost-two-year-old signs about as many words as he says aloud, and not even 10% of them overlap, so it really helps him express himself! He signs "airplane" when he sees a cheese slicer. Knowing just what he's thinking changes my view of the world!
