They are only 4 weeks old at this time. There are 6 in the litter. He is definitely smaller than the others but appears fine--not as active. Anyone have any comments about getting the runt of the litter?

If you can find Miriam (her pic is a Bassett) on here she has Bassetts, shows and breeds. She would be a great resource.

Go through some of the questions I've asked in the last couple weeks. You'll find her there.

Here's her profile...

Basset Hounds tend to have a houndy odor. It comes with the breed. That said, have the vet check him over for problems, such as ears, anal glands, skin infections, lip fold infections, tooth problems etc. Look at what you are feeding him. Many Basset owners report a reduction in the odor when switching to a corn-free food. If the dog is yeasty, you can try a disinfecting shampoo/soap, and DRY VERY WELL. Dampness, especially in wrinkles, flews, armpits and between toes, encourages yeast and bacteria which is smelly. Other than that there are some shampoos I like which have a strong perfume and overcome the hound smell for a few days - La Pooch, Oats Fur Coats (Kelco), and Lambert Kay Fresh and Clean with baking soda. You can also try a vinegar or Listerine rinse after the bath. Pour over the dog, make sure you get everywhere, and let it dry on. When you enter somebody's front door Where you've not been invited before Your nostrils may twitch To a stimulus which It is only polite to ignore It is faintly or pungently found Any place that has Bassets around And stinkily scenty To all cognoscienti Betokens the genus of hound Fastitious folk soon get tired Of the odor when deeply respired To all but the strong The Basset Hound pong Is a taste very slowly aquired Antiseptic deodorant foam Can't stop it corroding the chrome Defying detergent It triumphs resurgent As part of the fabric of home And when all that you own is imbued With that which your Bassets exude Blow your nose like a trumpet And like it and lump it ...Or live in a tent, in the nude.

If the parents are healthy and they are from a good breeder, it's perfectly fine to get the runt. He may be smaller just because there is so much competition for food, and the stronger puppies shove him away. Runts often develop into perfectly normal size adult dogs.

Depends on what you want him for. I wouldn't pick the runt of the litter for breeding purposes, but for hunting or a house pet, they're fine. And believe it or not, sometimes you'd never know they were runts once they're grown.

I've seen runts of the litter turn into fine loving companions with a little extra tender loving care. I raised one. We had to bottle feed him, but he did well. My dog had a litter and he was the runt, but grew up tall and strong.

My wife picked a runt. We have a 2 year health contract with the breeder. If they don't offer one, find a new breeder!

there are pros and cons to adopting the "runt" of the litter.

pros - adorable, wont grow too big, not as aggressive

cons - could have more problems as he gets older, more dependant on "mother"
