He fine, My son is 3 and stop taking nap at the age of 2 but he sleeps like 13 hours at night. Most kids stop taking nap around the age of 4-5.

I suppose it all depends. My 3 year old goes to bed, normally, around 8:30-9 and wakes up around 7. He still takes naps but those range anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I would think that as long as he is healthy and active enjoy the fact that he still naps for you. I know for me my son still needs it...otherwise there are nights that are really long because he is overtired.

As long as he is not having any trouble going to sleep at night at a reasonable hour it is fine and healthy for him to take such a long nap; however if he starts wanting to stay up until 11pm at night, i would wake him up from his naps to get him on a better schedule. From my experience as a preschool teacher, about half of the kids stop napping at age 4 but even some of the 5 year olds still nap. It all depends.

Kids grow out of naps at different ages depending on the child. Usually by kindergarten naps are abandoned, although even kids this age will nap ocasionally, ecspecially if they are ill or tuckered out from a hectic day. My daughter is about 2 1/2 and keeps almost the same schedule as your step-son, except she naps from 11-2 and goes to bed at 7 and sleeps till about 7am. She has always been a big sleeper and we've always kept to a schedule for naps and bedtime, she is also an EXTREMELY active child. It's been my experience that children acustomed to sleep schedules instead of just being allowed to fall asleep whenever they seem tired or cranky stick to they're naps to an older age because it is what their bodies and they themselves are used to. And the more active the child the more sleep they need.
most likely your step-sons 3 hour nap is what his body needs for the type of child he is. i would venture that he too is an active toddler, running around and playing much more than sitting down to watch t.v. or do another sedentary activity. I would not worry about his sleep habits just yet unless there are other things about his sleeping that seem to worry you. Young children need much more sleep than adults do. The recomended amount of night time sleep for an adult is 6-8 hours and 10-12 for a very young child (and suprisingly for teenagers too! It has something to do with hormone levels which are high and out of wack both in adolesence and toddler hood). As long as he seems sleepy at nap and bedtimes and wakes seemingly rested, your step-son is just fine!

Has he always taken lengthy naps? If this is something new...he may be going through a big growth spurt or fighting off an illness.
If he's always taken long naps...he must be one those kids that really needs this time to refuel. Your step-son is growing...he's probably a super active little guy during his awake time.
So don't worry...if he acts healthy and active while he's awake, it's not a big deal. There will come a time when he no longer needs this amount of sleep and you'll miss those naps!

When do kids grow out of naps? I'm about to take one right now, I'm 27....
Sleep is great, some people need more, some people need less. If you can't get him to sleep at his bedtime, then you might need to shorten his daytime nap.
The more he sleeps, the better. You only need to worry if his behavior is bad based on less sleep. Kids grow out of naps when they learn that they could be having fun instead of sleeping...
I think you've just made everyone in this community jealous of you for even thinking long naps and early bedtimes are a problem!

My sons grew out of naps when they started first grade, then they'd go to bed earlier during the week. A three hour nap is fine as long as it doesn't interfere with bedtime at night. From the sounds of things, he's doing just fine.

If he sleeps through the night then it is not too long. Kids are all different and nap times very. He will grow out of it when he is ready. Just make sure that when he is awake, he is active and or mentally stimulated. Long naps can be due to sitting around too long or bordom.

All kids are different. If he seems good with the current routine, and still goes to bed at night, you should leave him be. My oldest napped until she started first grade (and went to bed on time too) My second stopped napping at about 4. go figure.

You're all so lucky! If he's not on any medications that might make him sleepy I'd think this is perfectly normal. Some kids sleep a lot, some don't. Some never take a nap. This sounds normal for him.
