No. The idea behind a 'God'parent is that the child would have someone to take care of them in the event of your passing. Not that courts would allow it in most cases anymore without something legal (my suspicion anyway).

The purpose of a Godparent is for your child to have someone who can gear them in the right spiritual path ("God" parent) and also someone who will be the person (you feel) will care for your child best in case you and your husband were deceased before the child becomes an adult and still needs a guardian. So to answer your question, no, you and your husband don't have to be religious. The Godparent should.

Godparents are a religious idea, in the catholic church the people you choose as Godparents have to be confirmed catholics. I am not sure about other religions. I suppose it wouldn't hurt anyone if you asked someone to be your childs godparents, just call it something else

It is ok. I am a god mother to 2 boys in different families. And neither are religious. I think a godparent will love their god child wether religion was involved or not.

You don't have to be religious. The purpose of Godparents are to have someone (unually a married couple) available to take care of your child if something happens to you and to be there to support your child throughout his or her life. Godparents are a great thing for a child to have regardless of religious beliefs. it is also a great honor for a person to be asked to be a Godparent.

I'm not sure I see the point if you're not religious, but it certainly wouldn't harm anyone, and its a nice symbolic gesture.
Godparents are NOT always the people who will take your kids if you and your spouse die, those are the guardians you name for them in you Will, you can choose for them to hold both duties, but it is not a specified role of a godparent.

talk over with them and see in the event that they're prepared to step up and take over if some thing(insert God of you decision right here) could desire to ever ensue to you. if so positioned it in writing and each and each of you hold it on your significant paper spot, and make it known to the family members that those actually everyone seems to be the Godparents of your baby.

you can, yes, but what's the point. Godparents serve no purpose these days if you are religious or not.
