I've got budgie chicks and I want to know how to make a good handfeeding formula without buying one just in case the budgie mom stops feeding.

Hi there. Most experts agree that the store bought baby bird hand feedings are superior than what can be made at home. This recipe is for 24 hour usage until one can purchase something more suitable: 2/3 cup mixed grain or high protein baby cereal, 1 teaspoon of peanut butter (not organic), 1 teaspoon of baby food apple sauce, and 1 capful of unflavoured Pedialyte. Mix with enough bottled water for the desired consistency. Your parents should be fine with their job. Have a tweet year.

Give the mom a human cereal mixed with water, in a separate dish. Change this after about 3 hours.

If the mom does stop feeding you have to buy a specific parrakeet formula from a pet store. Parrot formula leaves a budgie still hungry with a full crop. It is by far the best plan to allow the hen to feed the babies. The dad bird should be helping too. Dont think because she does not remain all the time in the box that she has abandoned the babies, when they start getting feathers she leaves the box more and more and only returns to feed. If by some strange reason she does stop feeding you will have lots of time to buy formula so dont worry about it now.

What is the reason you are hand feeding? is it sick or are the parents rejecting it? if nothing is wrong i suggest waiting about a week to start handfeeding they are too small and can actually drown if you dont know what you are doing. now if it is in danger of starvation there isnt really an amount, you make the mixture very thin, just a little thicker than water. i use a straw cut at an angle to feed, use it like a scoop or a spoon. you feed as much as it will eat before it either falls asleep or just doesnt want to eat anymore and throw out any left over. feed every 2 hours. every few days make the mixture a little bit thicker. make sure to keep the chick warm while feeding.

Do not make your own! You should go to the pet store and purchase the proper formula. Incorrectly made formula can cause infections and death in chicks.
