First of all the males will sing all the time, the females will only tweet. Also a male will almost always have NO GREY on his face and a female will always have grey on her face unless she is a lutino. A female will also always have stripes or bars on her tail where the males will always have solid colored tail feathers or sometimes some speckled tail feather mixed in with solid colored ones.

Only a DIRTY FACE PIED MALE will be the only males with any kind of grey on their faces.

I have bred cockatiels for 20 yrs now and can tell you by viewing them what sex they are by looking at them.

The female usally sits on the eggs the most although the male will sit on them too while she is out relaxing and getting something to eat. Usally one will take day time and one night time, but both will be off the nest in the morning time ready to eat something in a hurry before returning to the nest before the eggs get cold. I the AM or when ever the female does come out, you may notice HUGE CLUMPS of poop she was saving up all night long so she wouldnt get her eggs nasty in poop. She will come out and poop right away because she so full and ready to go potty.

CockaTIELS to not need to be surgically sexed. The female cockatiel has stripes on the underside of her wing and tail feathers. It's a little hard to distinguish with the yellow, but the stripes are there. And yes, a female will spend more time on the eggs than the male.

Female cockatiels have 'bars' on the underside of their tail, and they do spend more time on the nest, but with some colour varieties the females do not have bars on the tail. Males tend to be an overall brighter colour than females. If you are still not sure, then take them to a good vet. They do NOT need to be internally sexed, it is an extremely bad idea to do this to any bird!! If you dont know the sex of a bird, and the vet does not know, he will do a blood test to determine sex. I hope this helps and you have little chicks soon! Good luck! x

To the person that says a vet puts a finger inside birds - where did you hear this? The vet can surgically sex by gas anesthetic and then looking inside the birds with a scope, a pin prick near the leg. It is true that female have bars and also the colour on the cheeks looks diluted. The male will have very bright cheek marking with no bars.

Since it is possible to visually sex a cockateil, these birds do not need surgical or dna sexing.

The male cockateil has a blue sear at the top of its beak
the female cockateil has a brownish sear .
The female does spend most of the time ( 20 --21 days ) brooding her eggs
while the male will come and feed her.
He will do a "share " on the nest ,
when the babies are hatched
and mum has a fly round for food .
As the chicks grow so the parents are more and more busy getting food for their family

Male cockatiels are very good talkers, so if you have a cockatiel who whistles or talks, it's probably a male.
And usually parents both sit on the eggs. :)
