Alcohol is a depressant.
Hypothetically......Say a Dr. prescribed a depressant to some one who is depressed.........(-)+(-)=(--) not good.
First he should abstain from drinking,(STOP SELF MEDICATING).
That way he can deal with his emotional problems, which may call for some professional help. It's not his fault, and he needs to accept, understand, and remember that.
Pride is the inablity to be humble, when we have problems we have no room for pride, and that is nothing to be ashamed of.
Not only is he hurting himself, but the one's who love him, too.
If he finds that when he honestly wants to, he can not quit drinking entirely, or that when drinking he has no control over the amount that he takes, then maybe he has a drinking problem, and should think about AA.

As an alcoholic, I hope my advice will help you. First and foremost, dont bother talking to him about serious things when he is drunk-he wont remember them and nothing you say will matter. When he is sober, explain to him that you are no longer going to have deep conversations with him after he takes the first drink. You might offer to sit with him, play a game, be silly, etc. but avoid the deep stuff. I have had many serious conversations with family while I was drunk, and have no recollection of it the next day. As for not having the money to talk to someone, there are so many resources on the internet. I am not ready to quit drinking, but I do sometimes go to AA just to talk, and there are many support groups available. He is welcome to talk to me, if he wants, but ONLY when sober. He certainly has enough to be depressed about, and its great that you are being supportive. The key here is to address the deep stuff only when sober

Minnie, my son got killed and I kinda can understand the depression. I drink because I'm depressed and I'm depressed because I drink. I did'nt talk I tried. Make him an appoitment with the psyscatrist and pay $5.00 a month if you have to. Stay on him and keep him active especially if he dosen't want to. Don't give in to his mopping, and talk about something else EVERYTIME he brings up the subject about his loses. When he relives it he goes right back to where he just came from. You to need help dealing with him so GET it. GOD BLESS you both, I know what your going through is pure hell.

Tell him it's not his fault and it's a part of life. There's not much you can do, but for one thing, drinking isn't going to solve anything for him. Try getting him out of the house and putting his mind on other things instead of the stuff he's depressed about.

There is free counselling (for grieving, etc). Do not let him easily shrink away from some group meetings in the paper or through local organizations. You can still attend on his behalf if he will not go.

any type of alcohol will make you depressed since it is a DEPRESSENT drug and it slows you body down. try to convince him by saying that you cannot run away from your problems and that running away from them will just make it worst. tell him how you would feel if he killed himself and that your life depends on his life.
