I think parents will, and should, discpline their kids however is most effective for them and if that is spanking then the government has no right to interfere. I believe that around 2 years of age children are old enough to know right from wrong and are old enough to take the consequences, as long as those consequences aren't abusive. And there IS a difference between spanking and abuse!! Point being they can't see what goes on behind closed doors. People get away with breaking their kid's bones now a day, so what would make the government think they can ban spanking a 2 year old?

I have mixed feelings about this issues. I try to refrain from spanking my child unless that is the absolute last option. I was not hit as a child (beyond the smacks on the hand or swats on the butt). I think we have to keep in mind that people have very different ideas on what spanking is. For one person it might be a slap on the bum, or hand, for others it could dmean a full on beating with a belt... I believe that there is a time and place for most types of discipline, but I would never support beating our kids with a belt...

There was this man in USA who slapped his 21 year old son for some bad deed & the son called the cops for his dad's act. The dad went to India with his son after sometime & as they landed there, that man pulled out his shoe & started beating his son like an animal. The son started yelling for help... the cops came around to look into the matter. The son complained that his dad is beating him for no reasons.... the cop replied... "son this is India... here only dad beats for no reason... this is your family's private matter we are not needed here... good luck".
So, I belong to India, where legislature has no control over this thing. However I personally feel that childern younger than 3 years do not have much sense so spanking in that case is useless unless they are really smart. They start making mischiefs after 3... when banned spanking, parents wont have any control over their ruthless activities & they won't fear being beaten if they do any wrong act.
So, its totally wrong... by the way who chooses the govt. in USA?? If its people... then why dont you force govt. to deploy some easier laws for parents?

Well, I'd have to agree... children under the age of 3 really don't have the cognitive ability to understand complex thought yet, and are just learning about the concept of cause and effect. If you are unable to understand cause and effect, how can you comprehend that you are being punished for something that you did without knowing what would happen when you did it? If parents understood the cognitive level of toddlers, they would be able to understand why a toddler can not comprehend the same level of information that an adult can. I am a preschool teacher of two and three-year olds, and as such, I obviously am not allowed to spank other people's children. You have to find creative ways to get children to do what you want them to without resorting to physical punishment. If preschool teachers can get 12 toddlers to comply without spankings, then it is possible for parents as well. Spankings should be reserved for children over 3 who are cognitively aware enough of cause and effect to understand the relationship.

Years ago, in Canada, the Government made a point if not a law with the idea that the Government should stay out of peoples bedrooms. I think it's time they make a law that would make the Government stay out of peoples lives when it comes to raising children. Of course, that will never happen, too many lawyers. Personally, I got smacked growing up, and I don't ever remember getting it for nothing. I even got away with a few. Regardless of what the expert say, discipline is a must and must be enforced, so hopefully you heard wrong.

It's just Big Brother trying to control all of us again! So when your childs going through their terrible 2s you can't spank them for the bad behavior until their 3? I'm not saying beat your childrens a**es with a board but a little spat on the behind from the time their 18 to 24 months old never killed any of my kids~ and I got 6 of them!

Well if their an infant or 1 year old than it's ok to ban. But 2 and 3 is when they start defying their parents so they should be spanked.

i think that this is an outragous idea spanking them when they are young is the best thing you can do it trains them early and puts the fear that they will be spanked if they do somthing thus making them mind their athouritative figure more and trust me once they have it in their head that i might get a spanking if i do that it might make them thing twice about thier actions and i mean a spanking not a beating with a belt an open handed smack or two on their bottom just to get thier attention now as they get older is when you increace the number of spanks and the implements that you use

I have a 2yr old from hell!!!!!And he knows hes naughty and he knows what hes doing...Cant nobody say they dont know what theyre doing at 2 yrs old.Spanking is the last option on my list but sometimes its neccessary.Like for instince...My son was throwing a fit bcuz whatever reason(he always trows them for no reason)....so i go to pick him up and he punches me in the face.I put him dowwn and tried to tell him he doesnt hit mamma ....so he bit me.I spanked him bcuz its not right for a kid to think they can hit their parents,He didnt bite or punch me again!!!!I didnt spank him hard..it was more of a surprise then anything. So i think that is crap cuz the government aint the ones that have to deal with some of these out of control kids!!!

Honestly I'm tired of the government trying to tell me how to raise my child and when to have an abortion and how to do this and how to do that... yes its great we have social services to help children that are getting abused and beaten and find them a foster family to help them and take care of them... but honestly... I mean no parent should really spank their child under three anyways... they really don't know any better... i mean I smack my son's hands and he knows not to try again.... but those are light smacks and he learns just fine from that. But I am tired of the government putting its noise where it doesn't belong... just like that stupid michigan rule now about cheating spouses going to jail for life if caught... how stupid is that... I swear.. can't they think of laws that we actually need.... and that can actually help us.. puleeesssee quit wasting my money...
